Forums - Gaming Discussion - Devil May Cry 4 to 360, PC

This particular announcement I was not anticipating, but I have been saying for awhile that the higher development costs on "Next-Generation" games was going to lead to a situation where third party exclusives became rare ... I expect that this is just the tip of the iceburg ...

Around the Network

I'll say it again, the third party exclusive is all but dead. People ought to be buying systems based on the first party selection and side features. This is why Home and Live are so key. This is why the differences in the featuresets are so important. Microsoft have set themselves up well by creating a very compelling online service, and Sony has anticipated this shift by buying up and developing a huge number of first-party developers. Only time will tell who had the better philosophy.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

However with the ps3 having already outsold the x360 in Japan, it's hard to think Japan's gamers are going to start buying one just because it's getting a few more multiplatform titles. I do think though it can help there image there, they really need to change their marketing campaign lower their price and hype the mess out of Eternal Sonata, Lost Odysessy and the Blue Dragon series, and work on getting a Gundam game for crying out loud, that's their real problem. X360 can't lead this generation until it gains some ground in one of the biggest gaming arenas.
I agree. But I think the future of PS3 and XBOX360 becomes very volatile situation in Japan. In Japan, some of people think a rumor AC6 and Katamari heading moves to 360 is true, only company doesn't release. And more, MGS4, FF13 and MH3 also... This news could become the turning point of SCEJ.

Not as big of news as people are saying. I mean, its great for the 360, but DMC is not THAT big of a franchise. Check the sales. DMC1 was the best-selling title in the series, and it wasn't among the top 50 games on PS2.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Individually, it isn't that big, but it seems like developers now expect games to sell well on 360 in the West, more so than Wii or PS3. Wii is different enough that developers will be able to capitalize...but to the average gamer what really seperates PS3 from 360? My room mate has not used the DVD player on his PS2 in 3 years..I doubt he is the only one, and the format war negates even that advantage...

It's only a matter of time before it's announced that Metal Gear 4 is not a PS3 exclusive anymore either and is heading to the 360 as well.

Microsoft has a good number of first party titles for 360 just for this year. Beyond that the 360 has many 3rd party titles that will likely remain exclusive or at most be on PC (mass effect for example). I think allot of this has to do with the markets in Japan and the US. If the 360 continues to do well in the US, with PS3 sales lagging behind significantly, than American developers will have little reason to port their titles to the PS3 since they wont sell well in Japan regardless of system. On the other side the PS3 may smash the 360 in Japan, but many of those currently exclusive Playstation titles also sell well in the US. This will lead to Japanese developers porting their PS3 games to Microsoft's platform mainly for the US market, but in the process will make 360 a bit more appealing in Japan.

capcom use cross-platform engine for DR, DMC4, LP and etc. so it`s easy to port a game, and i wouldn`t suprice, if they will announce port of Lost Planet for PC and PS3. =) Konami doesn`t use cross-platform engine. White Engine as far as i know, also is not cross-platform engine. EDGE also not cross-platform. UE3.0 is cross-platform. The engine used in SW:Unleashed also cross-platform. Cry Engine 2 definately cross-platform for pc and ps3, xbox360 like pc, so and for xbox360.

DMC1 was the best-selling title in the series, and it wasn't among the top 50 games on PS2. I know a PS2 owner who is still unsure whether he should buy a PS3 or Xbox360. Devil May Cry is one of his favourite games and if I tell him this week that it is also coming to 360 he will probably buy the box soon as he is also interested in Oblivion and other PC-style games for consoles. Obviously, a one man survey isn't making a trend, but I just want to point out that there are probably many people out there who haven't decided yet which next-gen console they should buy (and may only buy one of the three systems). Seeing that the PS3 is losing nearly all exclusive third party titles and the bigger library of the Xbox360 should make their decision easier.
What is not being mentioned here is the fact that the 360 is losing 3rd party exclusives as well. So if games end up on both systems it will come to a value based purchase. Here is the issue. Games like DMC, splinter cell, GTA (the 3d version) and others made it big in only one generation. Has anyone reallly thought about the prospect of new exclusives and titles for each system?

This all reeks of pure financial sense. As stated in various posts already, 3rd-party exclusives are basically dead (except when held by contract, and money has exchanged hands). It just doesn't make financial sense anymore. The PS3 and 360 are close enough in ability to make this possible - and its great for gamers. No longer should you have to purchase a console to play a specific game (except for a few) - now you can buy a console based on the one you want, and play the games you want. The DMC announcement doesn't really affect Japan - it may result in the sales loss of a few PS3's (short term anyway). But its much more important in the US/Europe - where more and more gamers will decide/realise that a 360 *is* actually good enough - and that if they have one, they don't need a PS3. Now it really is up to exclusives to sell consoles (and I personally think Sony has the weakest portfolio there). (also note that this doesn't really apply to the Wii - as its different enough to not really be 360 or PS3 compatible). PS - anyone else see this comment from Capcom:

Chris Kohler put together a little article concerning Capcom’s Treasure Island Z on the Wii. Capcom got in touch with him to discuss a few more Wii tidbits. - Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is still on track for 2007 - Devil Kings 2 for Wii in Japan, no US announcement yet - More unannounced games for 2007, and “at least one” should be announced in the next few weeks
