Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The art style of New Super Mario Bros Wii

Since NSMBWii has been announced at the E3, it is clearly my most anticipated game. I'm really looking forward to it, especially of course because it is the first 2D Mario on a home console for almost 20 years. I'm completely amazed by the game.

When I look at the trailers though, somehow I feel that my anticipation could be even higher. Until now, I didn't really know what the reason for this was. I mean, the game has everything, amazing level design, new power-ups, the koopa kids, multiplayer, just everything.

Now that I have started playing Paper Mario on the Gamecube, I found out what it is that doesn't really please me with NSMBWii. It's the art style. I mean, it is perfectly fine and I loved it on the DS, but for a 2D Mario game on a home console, I would wish for something different. I would wish it were like the one of Paper Mario.

Imagine a platformer with Paper Mario graphics, like in Super Paper Mario for example, just without the ugly 3D passages. It would look amazing. It would look like the box arts of earlier Mario games looked, like for example Super Mario Land's boxart. I'd love to see a true platformer with this art style.

What do you think? Are there people that agree with me?

Well let's take a look.
So you are saying you want NSMBWii a 2D Mario platformer, to have the same artstyle as Paper Mario another 2D platformer?

If NSMB had true 2D characters it would be another Paper Mario. That's just straight retarded. Considering there is already a Paper Mario on the Wii. I recommend you continue playing that if  you want a sequel to the first Paper Mario on Gamecube. The only Paper Mario looking game you'll be getting is Paper Mario.

"Hey, hey, hey! That is just not true."

If NSMB had true 2D characters it would be another Paper Mario. That's just dumb. Considering there is already a Paper Mario on the Wii. I recommend you just pick that up instead if you want a sequel to the first Paper Mario on Gamecube. That'll be the only paper mario looking game you'll be getting.

Paper Mario is not a platformer. The franchise is, at its heart, an RPG. It's just been bastardized. And New Super Mario Bros Wii isn't like Paper Mario anyways. Man this post makes my blood boil.

Isn't Paper Mario an RPG?

The thing is I don't think the more "cartoony" style for Mario really is what the masses want.

Yoshi's Island was very inventive visually, but the masses overwhelmingly chose Donkey Kong Country, which wasn't as cartoony/much CGI-ish. The more cartoony Mario gets, I think the more it seems to turn some people off.

The design choice of NSMB recalls the original Super Mario Bros., which was pretty simple, and for better or worse I think there are a lot of people that like that style. Look at something like Wario Land Shake! -- great animation, great sprite work yes ... but it's not going to sell anywhere close to NSMB or NSMB Wii.

@crazybone126

Do you really think I have more than 2000 posts on a gaming website, have a username called nintendo_fanboy and yet I don't know that there is a game called Super Paper Mario which I actually mentioned in my post and which contains platforming elements as well as RPG elements, is developed by Intelligent Systems, was released in spring 2007 in NA and in late summer 2007 in europe and sold 2.78 million copies to date if I remember correctly. You really think I didn't know that?

I am just taking a wild guess now that you have never played either one of the two Paper Mario RPG's or Super Paper Mario and thus you have no clue that they are a hell of a lot different from a true Mario platformer. Go figure.

Yeah I know Paper Mario is an RPG, it just doesn't feel like it anymore.
Yeah this post is making my blood boil too.

Well, yeah. Super Paper Mario was failed at being either an RPG or platformer though.

I would rather have it with sprites :/ Anyway I would like it cel shaded instead though
