Forums - Sony Discussion - David Jaffe's Twitter Says PS3 Price Drop. Now ...$199

God, Can't a mod edit the OP or something... There are people here who are believing it without question.

Tease.

If it weren't a joke it'd be a real reversal in the console wars. There is almost nothing MS could do against a $200 PS3, not even a $100 Arcade would so it for them, and there's no trick in the Wii's book to deal with this for the gamers. Now, I wouldn't abandon my Wii, but at $200 I'd definitely get a PS3 (and if XBox offered a HDD loaded version at that price I'd probably be on that as well). Price is really what drives the console market, and when Sony hits their mark, assuming they haven't been seriously beaten by MS (aka, HHD loaded model) they will really hit it hard.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Even at $199 I doubt the PS3 would sell much better, it's losing a lost cause, if people wanted a PS3 they would have picked one up by now.

Did you just read what you posted, I can't even believe that YOU believe that.

It comes straight out of Sony's own marketing hype: they have more than once claimed that people who want a PS3 would buy it at any price.

But in any case, there is no chance of it dropping this low in the near future. It will no doubt happen eventually, but that point is years away, either late into the "10-year plan" (which still makes me snicker) or the PS3's lifetime, whichever ends first. Sony still doesn't make money on PS3s at $399, as several of the gaming division's senior officials have said, but which has also been reflected very clearly in Sony's own actions. I don't think there will even be a price cut when the Slim comes out; Sony needs profit now, and a Slim unit may be able to provide that, but only if the cost savings are not passed on to consumers.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

^This is exactly why I said what I did CGI, It was Sony that said we (the consumer) would pay whatever price Sony asked for to get a PS3, this didn't work out quite how Sony planned did it?

Just randomly thinking n possibly not make sense but currently its been said that Sony is losing $40 off the current PS3s. And then article bout how production cost is %70 less meaning it only cost Sony $240 to make a PS3, so if Sony release PS3 at $199, they wouldnt mind since they've always been losing $40 per a console anways? Except now the PS3 has the $199 attractive pricing bringing in buyers alot easier. lol just my random thought XD

That's a pretty strict interpretation of Sony marketing materials.  24 million people have purchased a PS3 for between $400 and $600.  Any other console capable of that?

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

No, they didn't.  Kutaragi said he hoped/wanted people to want to work a few more hours to buy the PS3 when it was revealed at $500/$600.  Someone at Sony also said that some early adopters would buy the console early even if there were few/no games at launch.  Oooh, so horrible of them.  What else you got?  At least the console doesn't break, that's where your money goes I guess.
