Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox Live Preview Dropping Game Install Sizes

Hmm so are they compressing some stuff or reducing redundant files put on dvds for games to load faster ?

Most likely they have gotten rid of the dummy files and duplicate data files. Some games use dummy files to push the data out towards the outside of the disc. Information on the outside of the disc is read faster than on the inside. Like you've stated, other games use duplicated files so that they don't have to go back and forth from the inside to outside of the disc to get data. This reduces seek time and helps games load faster.

The size of some of these games make you wonder why all the cry for Blu-ray when most games take up 3-4 Gb after all the fluffs get removed.

By next gen this will be non-issue because we probably will end up with all digital distribution (boo).
