Forums - Gaming Discussion - Relative to its time, which console was more dominant...NES or PS2?

Ok, so the NES sold about 62 million and the PS2 has more than doubled that (and still selling), but this isn´t about simple numbers, it´s more about marketshare relative to each system´s respective times.

I understand the NES wasn´t as popular in Europe as it was in the rest of the world, while the PS2 enjoyed high popularity practically everywhere, but even then, I heard the NES managed almost 80% marketshare (worldwide)...dunno if it´s true...and the PS2 70/75%?

Would anyone know the percentages?....though the PS2 is called by many 'king' of consoles...was the NES, relative to its time, even more dominant on a global basis?

The NES.

NES, Nintendo was untouchable.

Nintendo almost literally had a stranglehold on third party publishers back in the NES days. I'd say their level of dominance will never be matched.

ok, you are on a sales page and asking how you can calculate the percentage of marketshare the leading console last gen had?

Hint: Marketshare(PS2)=Sales PS2/(Sales GC+Sales Xbox+SalesPS2)

You are most welcome.

If you go by marketshare at what was basically the end of the generation (2006), PS2 had roughly 67% marketshare. If you compare it against the Master System and the 7800, the NES had about 90%

Like someone else said, the domination of the NES won't happen again. Nintendo had almost complete control of the market, including third party publishers. And no-one at the time had internal teams as strong as Nintendo.

It's difficult to see NES or even PS2 type domination happening again, really.

The NES was so dominant people didn't say the were going to play videogames, they said they were going to play Nintendo.

NES sold ~ 60M. Its competition totalled out ~ 13M. That's a 82% marketshare.

The Ps2 will end at ~ 140M, or slightly less. Its competition sold 56M. That's a 70% marketshare.

Where'd you get those numbers for the competition? I've never been able to find numbers for the Master System and the 7800
