I don't know about "took it to the next level." I see it as more like 'took it in a new direction'. Nintendo is good at creating new game types, and it helps them by finding untapped demand, as detailed in an article I refer to here. (/shameless plug)

Well, I can certainly agree it's awesome, but semantics can be important. PS2-->PS3, "next level"; GC-->Wii, "new direction".

Well let's have at it then.

The two important terms here are "Evolutionary" and "Revolutionary."  Evolutionary is when you make some object that exists into a better form of that same object.  Revolutionary is when you redefine that object in part or entirety.

The PS3 is most an evolutionary change from the PS2.  It's a beefier PS2.  Changes such as PSN and a few other things are more revolutionary, but not uniquely such.  The Wii from the Gamecube is the reverse.  It is more powerful (evolutionary), but the core aspects of it from the Virtual Console to the controls are more revolutionary.

Going from Tekken X to Tekken X+1 is more of an evolutionary step.  Going from Tekken X to Smash Bros. is more of a revolutionary step.  With me so far?

Now let's substitute your "next level" for "evolutionary" and "new direction" for "revolutionary."

And thus we have proved the point that Smash Bros. is indeed a "new direction" and not the "next level."
