I think:
Galaxy will get better reviews.
Brawl will sell faster but Galaxy will sell more this year due to coming out first (49 days in 2007 vs. 28, in the USA)
And for the tricky one: Lifetime sales could honestly go either way -- Mario has the advantage of being Mario, but Brawl has the advantage of being the premier online multiplayer Wii game for the forseeable future -- and you get to beat up on all the Nintendo characters plus Snake. I think these more or less cancel each other out, depending on what the true composition of Wii userbase will be.
Brawl is huge with a capital HUGE, but Galaxy is shaping up (from what we all hear) to be like Mario 64 in quality, innovation, fun, etc., which frankly would elevate it to a level unreachable by mortal games.
ioi says Smash Bros. is the smart bet, I presume because of the ridiculous legs it had on the Gamecube, but there is no amount of hype or praise or value comparable to "as good as Mario 64 was."
So I'm betting on Galaxy.
