A white system for a lower price? Seems like they're borrowing someone else's ideas. I think this might help out sales, but the price cuts were meant to do that... and it didn't work all that well...

I have no idea where the pics are from. But I'm pretty sure the 40 GB model will be sold in USA... It was confirmed in PAL territories and Japan already, and the FCC has already received a new PS3 model for test, so it's pretty much confirmed... The first rumours of this version were for the USA anyway.

Hope so, I'd buy it in a second, I don't care about bc.
If BC for PS2 games is not important, why are so many PS2 consoles sold every month according to both Vchartz and NPD numbers? Someone wants to play PS2 games.
Let's make a summary so that we don't keep repeating the same things over and over.
Reasons why PS2 BC on the 40 GB PS3 model might not so important:
- there are a lot of PS2s on the market;
- there are more and more PS3 games;
- there is still a model with PS2 BC.
Reasons why it is important:
- PS2s break;
- many people expect a Playstation console to be backwards compatible (refer to Phil Harrison's quote about BC);
- the PS3 upscales PS2 games' graphics which makes them prettier on modern TVs;
- some people would prefer to sell their PS2 before buying the better PS3 model, in order to save money and space around their TV.
Feel free to add more to this list.

hmmm, I was reading an article about how the software emulator for the PS3 sucked compared to some other software PS2 emulators and there and I got thinking...what about using PS2Emu on the PS3? It's a PS2 emulator for Linux, and as I recall, PS3 can do Linux. I wonder if PS2Emu can read PS2 CDs. That would make this 40 GB model a little more appealing.

I imagine that PS2emu uses the PC's GPU for emulating the PS2's GS, so forget about it. On the PS3, you don't get access to the graphical card in Linux, it's restricted so that people can't make games for linux on the PS3 which would kill their licensing fees.
BTW, can you give me the link to that article you were reading please? I'd like to read it.
