Lands of Lore

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss

Ravenloft: Stone Prophet/Betrayal at Krondor (got them the same day).

A few posts earlier in this thread I posted my first three RPGs (Betrayal at Krondor, Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos, Ultima VIII) and I thought: I really liked Ultima VIII, but I wished I had discovered this series a bit earlier and played Ultima VII or one of the Ultima Underworlds instead, as many Ultima fans say they are much better than VIII.

While I did a little research on some Youtube gameplay videos of the first RPGs I played (my fourth was Stonekeep btw), I discovered that you can download the music of many Sierra/Dynamix games, incl. Betrayal at Krondor, from queststudios.com (with the permission of Sierra and the composers). I love the music of Betrayal at Krondor, especially the Main Title Theme.

Cool! Downloading now!

And, might I add, you have exceptional taste in games!

It seems strange that so many people played Dragon Quest as their first or one of their first RPG's, and yet it is still way less popular as a franchise than Final Fantasy, and even franchises like Tales of or Star Ocean that don't even appear on this list seem to be more popular in the west.

Back in the days, Dragon Warrior was the first real RPG on a video game console. Plus, the game was published by Nintendo (like the first Final Fantasy) which make it very popular back then.

Dragon Quest was the first true Console and 'JRPG'.  And it was brought over here with Nintendo's help.  Unfortunately, by the time it was brought to America, it was already released 3 years after it has been out in Japan (1986 Japan vs 1989 America).  By that time, the graphics and gameplay were kind of showing their age.  This was over 3 years after The Legend of Zelda, but even more than this, the American release of Final Fantasy was right on its heels less than a year later (1990).

The thing that stopped Dragon Quest from taking off however was the introduction of the SNES.  By 1991, the NES was off and running, and Dragon Quest III had just barely been released in America.  However, on the Final Fantasy side, they had not only gotten Final Fantasy IV out in Japan, but rushed it to America (calling it Final Fantasy II).  And to put the final nail in the coffin, Enix never bothered to release Dragon Quest V or VI (the SNES Dragon Quest games) in America.

All these things added up are why Dragon Quest never caught on in America.  And currently, Square Enix isn't doing that much to try to make the series popular either.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Ok my bad ... I need to drink coffee before I start replying to threads

My first second and third RPGs in the order that I played (and finished) would be the following ..

1. The summoning (Event Horizons PC)
2. Zeliard (I am not sure if it had stats but it is a hybrid adventure/action/RPG/Platformer)
3. Quest for Glory 3 (hybrid Adventure/RPG)
4. Betrayal at Krondor

5. Diablo, ultima, Elder scrolls etc I never finished.

It kinda makes me sad that so many peoples first RPGs were from the PS1/N64+ era, I mean that as it's sad so many never experienced those golden years.

The N64/PS1 era was a great gaming era and the accessibility of the Playstation did a lot to get new people into gaming.  You shouldn't be sad, you should be happy that your hobby was thriving during that time.

As for my list...

1)  (NES) Dragon Warrior I
2)  (NES) Dragon Warrior III
3)  (NES) Final Fantasy I

I think.  I picked up Wizardry, Crystalis, Day Dreamin' Davey, Battle for Olympus, and more during that time period.  Those are just the ones that stand out the most.

Also, Dragon Warrior III was easily my most played NES game.  I probably spent well over 100 hours on it.
