Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats happening to gaming?

It seems like very generation in video games, there are more quality games that focus mainly on violence and sex. There have pretty much always been violence and sex in games- in my opinion the quality and quantity of these games began to rise in the Snes era, and have not stopped. We are not at the point where you can simulate virtual murder by going through motion sensitive murder gestures that initiate gruesome murders on your TV. Whats happening to gaming? Whats causing this?

I have a couple guesses, and none of them are mutually exclusive.

The first is that, as video game graphics get better, it is easier to represent sex and vilence in games. For example, GTA was portably not possible until last gen.

Another guess is that people are just curious about violence or aspects of violence, and are trying to understand it. This could be especially true in games such as Call of Duty.

Yet another guess is that society in general is become morally corrupt. For example, there is a banner add on this website that has a partially naked woman. No one, including myself, thinks anything of this banner I bet. IT's just the way it is. Perhaps that is happening with video games as well; as violence and sexuality become more accepted in society, these  ideas become more prevelant in the game.

My last guess is that the number of violent and sexual games is increasing because there is a market for it. This on is  pretty obvious though :P

Please note that I am not for banning violent or sexual video games, though I am morally opposed to games such as Leisure suit Larry: Magnu Cam Laude or Manhunt.

What do you think is causing the increase in sexuality and violence in gaming?

i think your first guess is probably correct

I think it's just coz developers are lazy. Violence and sex are sure to sell games.

I was reading a interview about a professor who gave a class on video game. For the student's project, they are to make a game "With no relevence to sex or violence."

"All of a sudden, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.", the professor stated.

That being said, it's certainly hard to come up with new ideas and make them work really well. That's why you just stick to things that have been working, and will continue to work.

If that professor were to post such a project on the web, how fast do you think he'd get flamed for "obviously" trying to push Nintendo's kiddie agenda?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

gamers grew up and became interested in the dark side .. that's all there is to it .. I do enjoy the yin(the dark , evil brutal games with sexual content) and the yang (the beautiful , cute and lovely games) .. I feel the yang is a bit underrepresented on the console of my choice (PS3) , but I'm quite certain this will change within a few month

Sex in games has never really been a problem, there were porn games for the Atari and all you did was have sex in them.

Violence sells games, every game is like this, even your good friend Mario goes around and kills animals, you can't even do that in GTA.

is that supposed to be a joke or sarcastic?

Morality has changed for the better. People in my generation really dont care about race, violence, etc because we can tell whats what. The major problem is that people in the older generation looks down on how my generation acts because we dont care about those things. Yes theres some people in my generation are insane/sheltered/retard but thats the fault of the people who raised them. Not every game needs violence but really it's needed to being you into some game types. I dont see an FPS where you shoot candy canes at pumpkins that when hit by a candy cane flowers go flying everywhere. Same with an RPG. No you dont really need blood but still you need to be able to tell that your connecting with bullets, magic spells, etc. Sex, that is needed for some stories (God of War) or Simulations (The Sims). Cant tell a story about the Greeks without nudity and you cant have a life sim without it either.

I'm not sure where you live, but here in North America violent crime rates have been falling pretty steadily. So I don't think you can argue that society is becoming more violent. The most linked causes of violent crime are poverty and youth. Since the population has been getting older and richer, society had been getting less violent, not more.

As to sexuality, I would challenge you to argue that sexuality is somehow inherently immoral. I doubt you'll be able to do so without logical fallacies. I have no idea why pictures of naked women are more offensive to Western society than graphic murders. Nobody has ever died from boobies.

Hasn't the same thing happened in television, movies, and music as well? Compare the music of today to the music that was popular 60 years ago and I'm sure you'll see a huge difference in the references to sex and violence. Videogames are like everything else, a reflection of our current society.

Also videogames are for everyone so why do some people show them a complete lack of respect and want all of them to be censored to be acceptable to pre-teens, young teens, and religion? What would people here think of people who wanted television, movies, and music censored the same way?
