they hope their great games next year save PS3, and in the meantime fall back on their other divisions. Personally I think they should just weather the storm, and introduce a 79.99 PSP that has no media functions, but can play games.

Please leave the "is this a PD or not" issue out of here... It's obviously a price drop, both for the PS3 in Europe and for the 60 GB model which is also getting a price cut in itself. That's the difference between this measure and Sony's past pricing decisions.

This will cause a spike in sales, but it's not guaranteed to give the console any (much needed) momentum in my opinion.

It may be hard to see the impact of this measure in terms of momentum until 2008 comes, because the Holidays will prevent us from seeing the normal sales period until then...

If the PS3 does not outsell the 360 WW from october-December the PS3 is done.....sad but true. If Sony cant rape europe with the 40gb and a pes bundle and th eother bundle with HS and MS combined with japan......im sorry but its over.

Ive always said wait until after xmas before we crucify th ePS3...andnow with a $400 Ps3 on the shelves if it doesnt outsell the 360 worldwide, stick a fork in it.

I think it will handily, i think many people who frequent online forums are overreacting to the BC and underreacting to the Playstation brand...i base this on the great sales boost the $500 system gave it with NO game and NO holiday.....

As a PS3 owner i really hope to see some good sales for Sony this holiday.

I think it will sell well as most consumers are not aware of the changes like we are. And when the 60GB will drop out... the buyers have no other choice but to buy the 40GB.

If it fails, then SONY will carry on trying, what else can they do

Europe has the 60GB now, 40GB without PS2 BC will be introduced this month. 60GB is being sold as "starters-pack" with 2 games and extra Sixasis, as soon as these packs are being sold out, the 60GB will drop and 40GB will be the only SKU available in the European territory. Europe is "not" getting the 80GB, at least, not until further rumors and official announcements.
