Forums - Sony Discussion - Why SONY got rid of BC?

Garcian Smith said:
I believe it was done out of necessity rather than a marketing strategy. Consider the most expensive aspects of the PS3...

Blu-Ray? Can't get rid of that.
Cell? Can't get rid of that.

So, they're forced to cut other features to save money. The cut features offer less of a savings-to-benefit ratio than cutting Blu-Ray or the pricey Cell technology would, but again, cutting those two things would be impossible at this point.

What we're seeing right now is Sony reaping what they've sown. They added expensive, integral technology that nobody cares about, so when they found that their strategy wasn't working and that they needed a price cut, they were forced to cut features that people actually care about (like backwards compatibility and memory card readers.)

This hits the nail on the head.  The number one problem with the PS3 is the price, so Sony is looking for ways to cut costs.  They have to trim somewhere.

I think SONY hoped or figured that BC would bring many PS2 owners to the PS3. They gave that a shot and I am sure they got a number of people but quite frankly it wasn't enough. They know they can't ride the PS2 success forever so this is a drastic measure to get people jump to the PS3 and quite honestly stop buying PS2 games and pick up the PS3 versions.

I know this has been view by many as bad move but quite honestly besides lying which everyone in the industry for the most part does is not a big deal. The biggest winners and rightly so are people who want to play PS3 games and now may be able to afford the system. They don't care about all the USB ports, card readers, and just want enough space to save their games. Basically the average gamer. I really think the developers/publishers really pressed SONY to do this move because most have shifted to PS3 development.

This is obvious as many multiplatform games are now selling better on the 360 then the PS2 which means people are moving to the "next gen" systems. This was a good move for SONY though they will get bashed etc for a few weeks it will die down as gamers pick on something else to bash hopefully not SONY oriented lol. If anyone has any other reason why this was done or if you agree or disagree I would like to hear from you. I won't be able to get online for a bit but I look forward to some of your responces.

Lol, that will be difficult xD

OT:
Sony hasn't ditched BC, they just gave a cheaper option to those that want to enjoy PS3 games...I agree with elnino334, they made a good choice.

Like I said, who doesn't own a PS2 already. I really don't think this will cause very many problems in the long run, especially if they come up with something similar as they have for the PS1, pure software emulation.

Exactly Akuma. This really isn't a big issue at all in my view.

I think most potential PS3 buyers are already PS2 owners. In which case they can still keep their PS2 if they want to play old games, or simply move on and sell their PS2.

For instance, I never played a PS1 game on my PS2, and haven't so far, played a PS2 game on my PS3.

Also the option is still there for European buyers to buy a 60GB version with BC.

And the obvious answer to this thread: they done it to cut costs.

I applaud them for finally managing to bring the price down to 400 euro.

BC? What are you guys referring to? The Canadian province? I'm out of the loop here >_>

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

Backward compatibility.

There's so much discussion about it that people have gotten too lazy to type it all out.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
