Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 40gig version 100% compatible with PS1 games

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-72559.aspx

This is to dispel some confusion among potential consumers mind. Although the 40 gig PS3 isnt backwards compatible with ps2 games (AT THE MOMENT) it can fully emulate all PS1 games.

However look forward to firmwire updates which would make software emulation of PS2 games possible on PS3.

This is what BIZ DAILY is reporting :-

"GameDaily BIZ also contacted SCEE spokesman Nick Sharples who told us, "We have made clear on many occasions that our priority is on developing innovative new features and services for PS3 and not on backwards compatibility. The 40GB model no longer contains any elements of the PS2 chip set which powered backwards compatibility in previous models, and is therefore only compatible with PS one titles."

It would be a rip-off if it wasn't compatible with PS1 games, since PS1 compatibility has been software-only even on the PS2...

I think Sony is already working on a software only emulator of the PS2 for the PS3 (ofcourse to make it cheaper) , but won't promise it until it's working ...

It'll come

but until then they may get Negative Hype around the 40GB due to Whining Ninty Fanboys n MS fanboys

My prediction for YEARS END:

WII - 18.3 Million

Xbox 360 - 15 Million

Playstation 3 - 8.5 Million

you cant use the fact that a PS2 emulator *could* one day happen as a point against anyone complaining BC has been removed. It may happen, but even if they are planning it, it could take years to be anywhere near 100%, by this time the appeal of playing PS2 games will be greatly reduced, just as playing PS1 games is now.

Wii/360 fans aren't really creating the negative hype, im sure sony fans themselves are pretty disappointed, myself included mainly because i want to see the PS3 succeed and a cheaper model is a great step towards that, sadly i do feel that losing PS2 BC will detract from the appeal of the new SKU.

NJ5, i thought that PS1 emulation was also partially handled by hardware in the PS2? Only the PS3 fully does it by software. I could be wrong though.

I think it depends on the models of the PS2, the first ones had the PS1's MIPS processor included. My bad, I should have been clearer in my post.

PS: As a historic technical side note, I read that Sony did cause some games to not work when they removed that chip from the PS2, because they allowed developers to use the included PS1 processor for their additional processing needs. Sony tried to avoid these problems by increasing the MHz of the EE in order to give it extra cycles to emulate the MIPS processor, but even then some games still suffered as a result. The PS2 is such a complex architecture that different models had problems playing some games.

^^ Every day I learn something new lol. Even though what I just learned sucks! Games like what suffered? Like Shadow Of The Colossus? I suspect that game truly used all the power the PS2 could offer.

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.

The original PS1 CPU was included in all PS2 hardware revisions, because it served as the I/O processor for the PS2.

You people say this everytime someone brings up anything negative about the PS3 but then rejoice whenever that non-issue is fixed. Suddenly something that didn't matter becomes something that is worth celebrating now that it is fixed. Fanboys indeed.

PS2 backwards compatibility is far more important than PS1 basically because of the sheer number of desired titles on the PS2 vs those on the PS1 and the availability of Ps2 titles now vs those of PS1s. And please don't start going on about FF7 and all the other classics the PS1 had, even if you could make the argument that the PS1 had the better titles the fact they're not carried in most stores now doesn't really help the matter.
