Forums - Gaming Discussion - Camarack on Rage/Doom 4 blu-ray

iD Software's John Carmack further comments on console differences, revealing that Doom 4 will be released on three DVDs and one Blu-ray disc.

iD Software, which was recently purchased by Bethesda Softworks, has been hard at work on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC game RAGE.

iD's founder and technical director John Carmack has already explained the developer's thoughts on fitting their game RAGE onto DVD, previously stating:

"It is multiple discs. We think that it’s going to cram onto two discs right now. We’ve been spending a lot of effort on an extra compression method for it, and profiling where we can cut on that."

He further revealed that the reduced compression on the PlayStation 3's Blu-ray disc could result in higher quality in some aspects.

In a recent interview with GameInformer, Carmack has once again brought up the topic, explaining that the open-world nature of RAGE wouldn't translate well onto too many discs:

"We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just...we can't cut it into a third like that. We can cut it into two pieces. We've got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn't make an arbitary cut," Carmack told GameInformer magazine.

However, Doom 4, which will feature a linear single-player campaign, will make the jump to three DVDs:

"Doom 4 is being set up so that it's almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they've got the ability because of the way it's structured," Carmack added.

As for the development team's thoughts on each of the platforms; apart from previous comments from Carmack, he adds in regards to the PS3:

"There's a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we've got a little bit more headroom."

iD Software's lead programmer Robert Duffy further comments:

"We're getting along with the PS3 really well. We took a lot of time early on in the development cycle on learning it."

As for the Xbox 360, Carmack concludes:

"The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3."

Isn't this exactly what he said last year?

Its similar to what he said last year, but he never mentioned DOOM 4

A few years ago Carmack said he hated the PS3.

He later commented on the fact that the PS3 has less available memory due to the amount required by the OS.

Later he commented that the PS3 had more power for simulation, while the XBOX had other distinct benefits. Since they were designing a multiplatform engine, they wanted the game to run the same on each console. Time and time again he mentioned that the PS3 was the limiting factor.

Another article mentioned that the engine would take advantage of the Cell due to it's ability to use multiple cores.

Now it seems he's impressed with the choice for Blu-Ray in terms of future proofing the PS3

Anyways... I can't wait for both games!!!

Good old John Camarack.

Around the Network

Yes and he also said the PS3 now to him seems to be showing more "raw" power than the 360.

Exactly the opposite of what he said a year ago

When did Carmack say he hated the PS3?

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

With full respect to the most influential person in the industry back in the days. Does he (or id Software in general) still relevant to the industry as he (it) used to be?
