Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are most games worth $50-$60, even today?

Genre has nothing to do with what I'm willing to pay for a game, nor does potential hours played. I care more about quality of experience.

Shadow of the Colossus is worth more to me than any RPG on the planet except for one, and I can't imagine equating length to value.

Gameplay time is an element that contributes to that experience.

Personally, I think 50-60 is too high for a game. The problem is that there are too many people with their hands in that pie. Digitally distributed games will hopefully cut down on a few key areas:

Developer to Gamer format is a good example of this - Cut out the publisher, manufacturing and shipping costs via digital distribution, cut out the store that sells the game. Developer can easily make the same money, but at more than half the cost, at $20-$25

Or Digital Redistribution - go from the developer to a digital kiosk in a store, where the player can acquire the game. Frees up limited shelf space (as it turns into server space), and the game can sell for $30.

Only situations that require game funding from a publisher would be keep at the higher end, which with digital distribution, should only be a max of $40.

I was hoping for that too but seeing Sony charging people the same for DL games on PSP GO as they do for physical media makes me want to cry as I am afraid the others will follow.

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird.
Now the world is weird  and people take Prozac  to make it normal.

“If any creator has not played Mario, then they’re probably not a good creator. That’s something I can say with 100 percent confidence. Mario is, for game creators, the development bible.

games used to be worth 60 as there were relatively fewer of them... now, you crawl under good quality games and you could easily play 1 gen behind everyone without a minute of spare time... So no, games are overpriced.... that's kind of why Nintendo has lower prices I guess (nintendo DS games are cheaper and nintendo wii games are 10€ cheaper than third parties.... at least from my observations).

I don't buy my games in france anymore... buy from the UK, so for new games i never pay more than 40€HD or 35€Wii... and even then it's for game I want asap.... others I wait till they hit sub 20£ (below 25€) which is about the price I could find games on ebay in france. (France retailers sell used games at 50€...)

I would not pay 20$ for persona but I paid 60$ for halo wars.

I personally rarely pay full price for the game, im always waiting and looking for discounts even when i really want to pick up the Game, for Example im a huge fan of RE franchise but im going to wait until the game (RE5) hits 25 pounds before buying it.

But overall i think long games with good stories are worth high price. But games like Assasins Creed Arent.

Its cheaper than before, so $60 games are fine.

Quite so, but it would be silly to make the mistake of thinking that longer is necessarily better, or that shorter is necessarily worse. In point of fact, I would call Portal the most valuable game in 2007 that wasn't Super Mario Galaxy, and I've played Portal for about six hours total. Six hours - but those six hours are worth more than the dozens that I've devoted to many other titles this generation.

Sorry, the logic doesn't hold water for me.

wow, I thought this was a gaming site, but many people here say they rarely buy a game full price!

Enjoy

This is what happens when a publisher is also a console designer. Too many fingers in the pie, they won't be consumer-minded. Ultimately, there will eb two parties, the party that bends over for the company abusing them, and the party that tells them to piss off and doesn't buy their products anymore.

I wouldn't expect one of the big names to bear the flag of revolutionary change, it will happen with a small fry that comes out with a great game that becomes popular.

The revolution will be Tivo'd.
