I'd also think it will be discontinued shortly before the next generation, so around 2012.

Think of it this way, during the month of June, NPD reported:
PS2-152,000
PS3-164,000

When the console from 9 years ago is still selling within 15k units of its current-generation successor, it has to be used for all its worth.

Hopefully never i still have PS2 RPG games i want to buy like shadow hearts and DDS,If they take the PS2 off the market that means the rare games go away also:(

OT: I mentioned in the previous thread that it would most likely happen in late 2010/early 2011.

That should be about the time Sony gaming is getting ready to fold. But even then, Sony will never acknowledge the PS3 for the tragedy that it is. Sad.

It's like the Titanic. The builders were overconfident and thought it was unsinkable. Then it lost a floating match to an iceberg.


I suppose the tragedy isn't so much the downfall of the PS3 but the sorry state of affairs of a once proud gaming empire like Sony. They're the GM of video games.

Again, I still don't follow. Nintendo was once the "King" of video games, and lost their crown in the 1990s. Look where they are today.

The tragedy is that gamers only want to discuss (or mock) the shortcomings of the very companies that keep the industry afloat (mainly all of them). THAT's the REAL tragedy, spoiled, ungrateful gamers.

 

No, Nintendo, MS, and Apple are keeping the industry afloat. Sony is, at best, providing comic relief. That's the tragedy. That the king is now the court jester. Nintendo struggled, but they were never brought down the way Sony has been. Plus, Nintendo learned, which is more than what can be said of Sony. Finally, Nintendo actually MADE money on the GC and N64.

And with this, I now know you have no idea what you're talking about.

Like Sony, Nintendo brought themselves down. Sure, Nintendo was profitable, but at the end of the day, were still seen as failures at one point because of they're sudden position swap with the unknown (at the time) Playstation.

However, I give my hats off to Nintendo for coming back, and my hats off to Sony for still giving me games that I thoroughly enjoy, and not hating on the industry just because I can.

You should try it sometime.

You say that like it's some minor technicality, but that profit was probably what kept Nintendo in the console business. And it's not as if Sony's losing $10 per unit. It's a whopping $40, WITHOUT the price cut.

 

And I DO take my hat off to Sony for making great games. I just lament the fact that they've still fallen so far.

Like I said before, I don't care what you claim, you've proven that Sony succeeding is the furthest thing from your thought process.

I'm not denying Sony's past successes. PS1 and PS2 were absolutely brilliant. I'm just very, VERY skeptical that the PS3 WON'T be the demise of Sony gaming. Can you prove me wrong?

When one of their other consoles starts making money.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
