Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dreamcast overrated?

Many people affirm that the Dreamcast was the console that Sega did right from the very beginning. I twas easier to develop for than the Sega Saturn, it was more third party friendly and the games looked and played really great. However, it came too late because Sony had a great momentum with the Playstation brand and they couldn't compete with Nintendo either, add Microsoft's Xbox to the formula and the rest is history

Anyone else think the desicion to abandon it was pretty stupid? Considering they had more unsold units than sold, they could have just closed their factories and supported the console with software a few years longer and maybe they would have made up for the losses.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I believe DC was underrated when it was released and overrated after its death.

Why Dreamcast is so loved and remembered so fondly today:

- Its first 2 years were so much better than PS2 games in RELATIVE terms. Think about the gap from PS1 to DC games. First party DC games were fast paced - brilliant and HIGH-res games, a huge leap from PS1. When PS2 was released, it was a let-down in graphics department, it barely matched those of DC and even inferior to DC for 1-2 years. Besides it couldn't show off as DC had already filled the gap between two generations. An actual leap from DC was realised by Xbox

- It was small, compact, user-developer-mod friendly, simple to use, and affordable.

- It was mode friendly. You could have played videos, music cds, mp3s, browse internet, emulate nintendo and sega classics etc...

- It has the home to many classics today.

=> Metropolis : father to Project Gotham Racing (day&night, weather, radio, kudos etc)
=> Virtua Tennis (very intiutive controls, easy to learn, hard to master, outstanding graphics)
=> 2K Sports Series (Many of them had a better playability than Fifa Series)
=> Soul Calibur Series (The DC version still shines, probably the best fighter of all time)
=> DOA 2 (Although started in arcades, this version had huge arenas, high interactivity)
=> Crazy Taxi Series
=> Shenmue (although cancelled, it was an incredible and unique experience)
=> Sonic Adventure (The best 3d sonic, a showcase for the console with fast-paced graphics)
=> Resident Evil Code Veronica (First 3D title, one of the best in the series)
=> Powerstone Series (Similar smash brothers in a closed 3d environment)
=> Seaman
=> Unreal Tournament & Quake 3 (Better than PS2 versions, Internet gameplay, Split Screen, a huge prelude to Internet Console Gaming!)
=> Ecco the Dolphin

and many others...

The Dreamcast is the Heath Ledger of consoles.

The Dreamcast was really was quite an amazing system if you were a hardcore gamer, fighting game fan, or scrolling shooter fan. The former two because the most popular of those two genres ran on Sega Naomi hardware, hence giving the Dreamcast perfect arcade ports.

As a hardcore fan of scrolling shooters and Street Fighter Alpha 3, the Dreamcast was and still is an excellent system as far as I'm concerned, but even I have to admit that it really had a lack of mainstream appeal. The only third party to give it any kind of half-decent support was Capcom. The lack of support from EA, Square, and Konami alone was enough to make sure it would have a hard time in the US and Japan, and lack of support from every other third-party as time went on pretty much spelled its doom. It did have Soul Calibur, NFL2K, NBA2K, Sega Rally, Skies Of Arcadia, but most gamers cared more about Tekken, Madden, NBA Live, Gran Turismo, and Final Fantasy.

I wish the Dreamcast replaced the gamecube. Last Gen would have been even better if that had happened

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

The Dreamcast had a ton of amazing games. You are wrong.

I agree it was only on the market for 2 years, then the xbox and ps3 destroyed it.
