Forums - Sales Discussion - How much does piracy affect game sales?

In just America so far this year there has been over 1 billion dollars lost because of people downloading games. That's how much.

But they count those games like if every pirated game would have been bought if there wasn't piracy, what isn't true. Even with piracy 360 is the console with highest Attach Ratio worldwide nowadays, DS having pirate so easy is still the portable with highest Attach Ratio ever, PSP have the normal attach ratio for handheld and consider many people don't use it to play.

Piracy is somehow important to console companies that don't lose money per console sold, many people wouldn't even buy a console if there wasn't piracy. Sony did lose money per console, and then they have the only console the isn't pirated nowadays and still having lower attach ratio than 360. Consider too that many piracy not just for gaming but for industry in general is used per person that don't have how to afford buying original, and is important for industry like an all.

Thinking in OS for example, if it wasn't so easy pirating windows many people would go for Linux. I mean, windows have nowadays near 90% of the computers, of this at least 30% should be piracy. If those people went to Linux the support to this system would be enormous and MS could lose many of the 60% that use original systems.

If a game don't sell well don't put it on piracy, even with piracy we have 10 millions sellers in ps1 era, ps2 era, and many in wii era. If people think it's worth paying full price for a games be sure if they can afford for it they will.

There's no way to no. To suggest it isn't impacting the industry is very silly but I still don't think its neccesarily as bad as some developers say it is.

One of the indie pc games last year though had a piracy rate of like 90%, so tell that to them lol.

I agree with, but isn't the monster that company make it looks. Sure games would sell more if there wasn't piracy, but, how much more? Is that quantity enough to justify milionaire investments in anti-piracy systems? Is enough to make console company hurt overall hardware sales for selling more software?

@happy. I believe you are wrong. I believe people think this way: "Why spend money on the game when I can have it for free".

True. SOME games they pirate that they wouldnt have bought, but then they get so used to pirating all games that they never buy anything.

You can expect someone who has pirated the entire SNES library on their computer to have gone out and bought them otherwise can you? The same is tru with current games. Some may have been bought, but most are simply taken because "The price is right"

Well...at least someone pulled that number out of their ass. Just like most posters say here its impossible to tell how it effects sales. Cant tell if the pirates would have bought, bought used, rented or never bought the game.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.
