Forums - Sony Discussion - If Sony announces a PS3 Slim for Winter 09 a Pricecut WONT happen

I was thinking about it and if Sony were to unveil a PS3 Slim for Winter 09. I think that it would make the most sense if Sony kept the system at the current price point. With every new Slimline console we know that Sony saves a bundle of money on production costs. The smart thing for a company in Sony's shoes right now is to go the route of the PSPGo which is to make profit and try to recoup some of the losses that have incurred during the Fat PS3's lifespan (It won't make up for all of their losses but it will help).

Thats why I think that the only sensible thing for Sony to do in the situation of the PS3 Slim is to keep it at it's current price-point of $399.99 until at least the beginning of the next fiscal year. As well as bundling it with the potential heavy hitters coming this winter (NA/EU- PS3 Slim+Uncharted 2/GT5, Japan- FFXIII/GT5) To insure that as many consumers as possible have more reason to pick up this system. And when the momentum is starting to fall cut the price at the beginning or even mid-way through the fiscal year OR if they think they can keep up the momentum Winter 2010 to regain traction and keep sales up.

In the end I think at this point in-time Sony should be focusing on Making Profit or at least break even first (This includes having Killer Apps implemented to gain attraction and appeal for the system), try to make as much money for as long as you can and THEN cut the price and focus on marketshare.

So what do you guys think? Does this sound reasonable or just the ramblings of a fanboy trying to tell himself hhis favourite company is going to be around Next-Gen?

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

I would have agreed, before the PSP Go was announced at $250.

Clearly, they have created a source to make extra income. Added to the fact they are miles away from their hardware projections, I really do expect a price cut.

But given Sony's financial I think that kind of Move would be stupid. The way to go is to maximize profit and make as much money as possible THEN focus on Market Share

We've yet to see if the GO brings the cash...

Both are coming, the slim's reduced manufacturing costs should allow for a $50 price cut that may result in equal losses they are experiencing with the fat atm.

Yea, I understand your logic, but I really think a pric cut and a slim are coming this fall......
I guess Sony has given up making money on the PS3 (as a whole and for a while at least). They would probably rather offset losses and make profit through other products and divisions.....and gain PS3 marketshare and Playstation brand recognition for the future.
I think the PS3 is the best, but from a business prospective, it really is a nightmare

Isn't the point of the PS3 slim to cut production costs, so they can cut price?

I see what you're saying and I remember hearing that while Sony is losing money on the Hardware they are making it up from their Software performance and PSN download figures. So you may actually be right
