I prefer the PS1 a bit more, but it´s still a tough call.

As far as I´m concerned, the PS1 had more good/great games, but the N64 had more 'special' games.

N64.

PS1

I got the N64 in 1997, still working perfectly today. I got a PS1 not long after that and it broke within 3 months and we never got it replaced. I found the N64 to be amazing with Mario stepping into the world of 3D and the sound of birds chirping and his footsteps as he ran were amazing at the time. To me, the PS1 felt like a souped up SNES and not the next big thing it would become.

I did play the PS1 extensively at my uncles house though and loved playing Metal Gear Solid and the F1 games but nothing much else outside of that really grew on me and made me want to continue playing. For example, I found Crash Bandicoot to be boring compared with Mario 64.. The PS1 just didn't have the same magic and charm as the N64 and I found the controller to feel much lesser quality at the time.

My favourite games from the generation included: Mario 64, DK64, Banjo Kazooie, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, F1 Championship 98 (I think that was the game, N64 game), 007 and Mario Party 2. Having Pokemon on the N64 also helped it's cause.

So to me, the Nintendo 64 was far superior to the PS1 as it had my tastes in gaming covered. It also was home to one of my newest favourite games, Majora's Mask, which I recently played as it came available via VC. PS1 doesn't come close.

Hmm... well, I didn't really care for any of them. Saturn has games that sound interesting... in Japan. None of them came over, and many of them are a bitch to find now. (Having the definitive version of Symphony of the Night does give it a point, though.) The PS1 is when graphics really started taking over, and it was more about the FMV than the gameplay. This is something I see as the biggest downfall in gaming- it led to the ballooning budgets of today, with games that really aren't any longer than the SNES days. (And for the curious, many of the PS1 games in my profile are the roommate's, not mine.) The N64 had the only game to get the camera for 3D right (Mario 64), but I like RPGs, and the 64 had.... Quest 64? Yeah... about that... (Though I would like to get my hands on Ogre Battle 64.)

I've minimal experience with the others, so I can't really comment much on them. My one exposure to Jaguar left me less than impressed (it felt like SNES games- but worse), and I've never used a 3DO or Pippin. If I had to pick a system, it would be either the N64 or Saturn, which one would depend on my mood at the moment.

-On a quest for the truly perfect game; I don't think it exists...

N64... For me it was just new experiences after another.

Mario, Zelda, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Starfox, Pilotwings, etc...

And the 4 player multi games kept me and my friends up late night, especially wrestling games!!! Soda and Pizza!!! or was that beer?!?!!?

@ the people who started talking about a list war: It doesn't matter how many good games the PS1 had, N64 had THE BEST games! (at least that's my opinion)
