"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

remaking dragon quest VII would cost way much, way more than FF7 ps3 remake, theres a reason why that game wasn't in 3D at its time, it will take them to much time and most probably be published when wii2 is already in shelves. dragon quest swords 2 is an obvious one, it gave them money and they want more money.

wat

have you played DQVII, its the longest JRPG there is(besides pokemons infinite gameplay) and when its over, hell its not over, there is still god to beat. the graphics were 2D(no static backgrounds) for it to fit in two discs and not in like eight, the game is just enormous, the game had zero to none FMVs, if it had they would need like twelve discs, just play it but first leave a note in your door to inform people you wont be coming out out 2012.

Yes, DQ7 is a long game, but it's by no means so long as to be absurd. Persona 3 FES when you factor both the journey and the answer, is a longer game. And that was done by a company much smaller than S-E, so I don't see how length alone is a valid argument.

What would be a valid thing to look at, though, would be to ask what costs the most to do. And the answer to that is not length of the game, it's graphics. I'll keep looking at FF7 vs DQ7, since those are easy to compare. Both games are on the PS1, and yet FF7 cost considerably more to make. Sure, it's 3 disks versus 2 in DQ7, but why is it on 3 disks? 1 answer: FMVs. Remove all of these from the game, and yes, the game will fit on 1 disk. But of course, the fans would have a shitfit if they were removed, and rightfully so. So now we need to look at this with the remake.

DQ7 will need to have the game engine redone. There were few enough FMVs that it won't be too bad to redo those. However, FF7 will need to redo the slew of FMVs it has. The FMVs, since they are not done in the game engine itself, need to be redone seperately. And how much do they need to be redone? Well, the DQ engine for the Wii would only really need to deinterlace anything that may be so. But FF7's FMVs would need to be completely upscaled to HD for the PS3, again, taking more time and money.

Doesn't mean it's not FF. Unless you don't consider the Tactics games and Dirge of Cerebrus not FFs.

There's just so many takes on the series.

Dirge of Cerebrus was a spin-off of Final Fantasy VII. It relied on what happened in FF7 for everything about it.

FFT is interesting, while it is a departure from the series, it's still an RPG.

Crystal Bearers looks like a complete change from the Gamecube and DS versions in all aspects. I think it's a great thing.

EDIT: And no, I don't really consider Dirge to be a real FF game.

I don't think so.

Look, FFCC:CB was announced before the Wii was even out, then the rest of the games have been either ports, WiiWare, spin-offs or liscenced cheap games.

The only big game announced after the Wii was out was DQX, but it's like 3 or more years away and I still believe it was a moneyhat by Nintendo considering the timing of the announcement.

IMO SE has already made their mind, which is support portables with the better games and HD consoles with their Western and Online games, Wii is irrelevant to them.

Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

Fullfilled Prophecies

obviously so. CB is a huge step foward, and DQX is a major sign of commitment. With the big support of the Nintendo DS toward SE games, and the high attach rate of DS-Wii market, its obviously showing increasing interest than before. As surveys conveyed in japan, the largest market share of wii owners want to play JRPGS ,and whos better to deliver that market than SE?They always go for the biggest market and certainly in Japan the wii is hungry and waiting, they are smart to think of their best interest(doh).

OP: How is Dragon Quest bigger than Final Fantasy?
And this time around, there are two platforms getting FF, making it even more likely to be a success.

Like some others have stated; I think SE's future Wii support will depend heavily on whether CB makes it or breaks it.
Regardless, though, I don't see any of the major franchises' main games switching platforms this gen.

DQ X. What more is there to say.

Well I was thinking in terms of  Japan since Square-Enix is a Japanese developer and thier audience has mostly been there. In Japan Dragon Quest is bigger than Final Fantasy without a doubt. But worldwide I agree, then Final Fantasy wins.

The thing is S-E has always put Dragon Quest on the "winning" console, they are very selective with how and when they put out the games in the series and in that sense it is their biggest and most treasured franchise and the consoles that has gotten Dragon Quest has also gotten further major support from S-E. Therefore I don´t think it´s unreasonable to suggest that S-E should and will support Wii further.
