Forums - Microsoft Discussion - WHY DID MICROSOFT ENTER THE CONSOLE RACE?

yeah, MS doesn't have a monopoly dude...not even a virtual one. They have something that closely resembles one. Now, what they are doing is just smart business. Sony does it, Nintendo does it...everybody does it to some degree, it's called competition, and it's good for us, the consumer.

^ No, there is no competition for operating system software. That is a monopoly and if you wanted evidence of this just look at the continuing issues of licensing and anticompetitive lawsuits thrown at the company.

The reason Apple never got anywhere is bcoz of MS "agreements" with retailers. The reason Netscape went out of business was bcoz of anti competitive behavior.

Google might be gargantuan but from my perspective theyre a fairer choice than MS. We'll see what happens after W7 releases bcoz that might actually be one of MS's last big os release. I wonder whether Google can sue MS for excluding the choice over operating systems, if for example you could just download it are you easily able to just reinstall or what.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

They do. Just look at the percentage of Windows operating systems sold pre-installed on new computers. Only one to have an impact is Apple, and Apple doesn't sell its operating system outside of its own hardware. So yes, M$ really seems to have a monopoly.

And, did someone say monopoly wasn't smart business? The point is, that if M$ doesn't change, or get its standards driven to internet content, someone will eat away its market. Times change and their businessmodel is from the past.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Guys, MS does not have a monopoly, it certainly looks like it because they have a huge portion of the market share, but as long as there are Linux based O.S., and the Apple O.S. people have a choice. A monopoly does not give people a choice. Oh, and if you think for one second that Google won't pull the same shit MS pulls, then you need therapy.

If the market is big and within MS's capability to develop the tech, they want a piece of it. It's business as usual for Microsoft. Same thing happened with the ZUNE and Apple for the music industry.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

A threat to what? Windows?

A threat to PC gaming and games for Windows. Why do you think all 360 games are on PC as well?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

To angry 360 players that buy 360 games instead of downloading Pc games from torrents and not paying for Live too.

Or was it the ps3 players that do that? And they don`t buy a 360 because they buy/pirate all 360 games on Pc and say that in the 360 players face?

I don`t know...can`t remember...sorry...

With over 95% market share the last time I looked MS absolutely do have a monopoly position and have absolutely abused it numerous times.

I agree though that Google is quitely trying to built a monopoly itself, no question about it.  Right now it doesn't have as much of a monoply as MS does, but they're sure trying.

Ideally Google will seriously weaken MS stranglehold on OS and Office systems but be unable (or restrained themselves) for setting themselves up in place of MS with a stranglehold on content/internet access.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Unless MS has 100% of the market share, they do not have a monopoly. Consumers still have a choice of O.S. as well as many apps. So once again, no monopoly.
