Forums - Microsoft Discussion - WHY DID MICROSOFT ENTER THE CONSOLE RACE?

I think you should run for Mayor of Funky Town

Because they wanted to show the Japanese that they need American tech

Repent or be destroyed

Like the Internet, Microsoft were late to realise how big gaming is and will become in the future.
Originally they tried to buy Nintendo, this was in the late 90's but Nintendo said no.
MS then set about creating the Xbox. Created in a short development cycle it has x86 architecture and they got screwed over with the price of the parts.

You can't just state that Microsoft only entered because Playstation was a threat. They are also in it for the money, just like everyone else.

sony microsoft and nintendo are a business and all businesses want to do is make money but no one is more greedy than microsoft
all they care about is more money no matter what this does to the consumers they will always think about making a quick buck

except Nintendo, theyre in it for the lulz.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Yes because Sony and Nintendo aren't in it for the money.

well obviously sony isnt in it for the money I mean they are loosing money for every PS3 sold to consumers!

lmao

XD I knew some fanboy would come in here and say that, I just wasn't sure if it would be you. I'm glad you can acknowlege your favorite brand is failing so badly at making money this gen( and yet, because gamers don't have the same goodness in their hearts, they are going for the other consles despite Sony's selfless act.).

Funny thing is, they are just trying to compete with MS this gen, if they fall too far behind, they may not be able to compete next gen. Which means less money in their pocket because of what they were planning on doing this gen (the whole media center thing). Sony is willing to lose money this gen, to hopefully reap the rewards next gen...kinda like what MS did last gen (hey, what can you say...it worked). So to answer your sad little comment, yes, yes Sony is in it for the money.

Past Avatar picture!!!

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

Why does any company make a console? MS is a huge company and there wasn't any real risk for them.

Gives Bill Gates kids a chance to play games not named a PS2 from Sony or an iPod Touch/iPhone from Apple.

Right... forgot Nintendo doesn't exist

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
