Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox 360: 24 months, 25 million sellers

With November 2007 just around the bend, the 360 will have been out for 2 years since its launch. In that time, it has had 25 titles sell over a million copies (using Vgchartz numbers). That's an excellent run -- an average of over 1 game a month selling a million copies.

Looking back on the games that sold a million already, which games do you believe will sell a million in the coming 12 months, bringing us to November 2008? It'd be interesting to look back at this next year and see how close (or utterly not close) we were in our predictions.

Here's the games I think will hit a million worldwide that release between now and then:

Mass Effect
Call of Duty 4
Assassin's Creed
Grand Theft Auto 4
Guitar Hero 3
Left 4 Dead
Fallout 3
Fable 2
Saints Row 2
Halo Wars
Lost Odyssey
Project Gotham Racing 4
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
Turok
Mercenaries 2
Pro Evo Soccer 08
Pro Evo 09
Madden 09
NCAA Football 09
FIFA 08
FIFA 09
Splinter Cell: Conviction

Games with a good shot:

The Orange Box
Ninja Gaiden 2
Dead Island
Alan Wake
Too Human
UT3
Rock Band
Burnout Paradise
Devil May Cry 4
Need For Speed: Pro Street
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Games with an outside shot:

Scene It (I can see this either completely bombing or doing very well -- Christmas will be telling)
Kane and Lynch
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements (very outside, but decent western RPGs seem to fly off the shelves)
Dark Sector (looks vaguely like a cheaper Gears of War -- marketing will determine how this game does)
Prototype (my gut feeling is that it will bomb, though, since all Sierra console games seem to bomb)
Fracture
The Bourne Conspiracy
Borderlands
Warhound
Darksiders
Elveon (another mature RPG that I think will surprise with sales)
Huxley
Marvel Universe Online
Postal 3
Rise of the Argonauts
Silent Hill 5
Totems (I think 500,000, but not 1 million -- game looks amazingly fun, though)
Banjo 3
Jericho
Blacksite: Area 51
TimeShift
Chronicles of Narnia/Golden Compass (depends on how the movies do)
Tony Hawk: Proving Ground
Naruto: Rise of the Ninja
World in Conflict

star wars will be a SLAM DUNK 1millon++

I am curious how much PS3 titles would sell +1 million after two years.

I think 8 of your top 9 on your "outside chance" are pretty much no brainer 1M+ worldwide sellers... Also keep in mind that you have million plus sellers over the last 2 years with a slowly increasing base. I expect the 360 to push at least as many consoles out the door as they did last christmas -- 2+ million.... The number of million sellers is only going to increase as the install base increases and getting there will happen faster...

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

I must say as a Ps3 owner

that only 2 million sellers in a year (it will be soon) is kinda bad

360 is looking good in these terms

how many million sellers did it have 1 YEAR after launch

Supporter of

 SONY & Nintendo

Consoles owned - SNES, N64, PS, GC, PS2, PSP, PS3

 I DO NOT support Xbox

My prediction for YEARS END:

WII - 18.3 Million

Xbox 360 - 15 Million

Playstation 3 - 8.5 Million

Wow. I'm actually not even familliar with alot of those games in the "outside shot" territory, so it's hard for me to predict on them. I'm going to say no to Tony Hawk though. That series has been completely run into the ground. And now that Skate is offering a fresh perspective, I think Tony's days are just about numbered.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Maybe I should reorder for 'Outside Shot' and 'Good Shot'... I think I will.

However, I don't think any of the ones in the outside shot area now are no-brainers. I see possible hiccups for all of them. Of those, these seem the most likely:

The Orange Box
Ninja Gaiden 2
Dead Island
Alan Wake
Too Human
UT3
Rock Band
Burnout Paradise
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Devil May Cry 4

... but all of those have something that keeps me from pulling the trigger:

Ninja Gaiden 2 has a huge fan base, but its difficulty has kept it from being an astronomical seller. We'll see if that's adjusted.

The Orange Box seems like a certainty, except I'm unsure whether its '5 games in 1' package might confuse the average consumer. The box art makes it look like a cheap collection of games instead of 5 amazing and complete titles. Personally, I think they should have released Team Fortress 2 as a separate title, and Portal as an Xbox LIVE game.

Dead Island looks awesome and has a great concept... but it's an unknown quantity and a new IP. Could be Bioshock or could be forgotten in a week.

Alan Wake is jaw-dropping, but its genre might hinder sales.

Rock Band has everything going for it -- hype, marketing, and a popular genre. However, its price due to all the peripherals may be prohibitive.

Burnout Paradise seems like a likely million seller, but there's so many racing games coming out, it might get lost in the shuffle.

Too Human is a complete mystery. There's so much drama about the game that it's hard to tell what's real and what's hype.

UT3 looks amazing, but it has always been a PC-oriented series. It also does not have the 'main character' factor that other huge FPS games have had -- there's no Marcus Fenix or Master Chief, just random PCs killing each other.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed again looks amazing. However, only the KOTOR and Battlefield games have really had 1 million copy success on consoles lately. The Jedi Knight series, which this game most closely resembles, has not yet achieved it.

Devil May Cry 4 is also a mystery. The Devil May Cry games have had a wild varience in the amount they sell. I can see it selling a million, easy. I can also see it puttering out at 300,000.

Well the 360 has gotten a lot of big games and had the good side of things of getting most of the big 3rd party games early and earn that as the main console. No surprise here.

I have to ask why anyone would bring up a Turok game at all ... The series has become so awful over the years that it should NEVER be talked about again.

You could make a topic about it.

Looks like 3rd parties are enjoying some healthy sales on the 360. The list of million sellers is big, and it'll keep getting bigger as games like CoD4 and GHIII come out, not to mention the promising new IPs like Mass Effect and Bioshock.

So many games, so little time.
