Why does the PS3 have higher software than the 360 despite having a much smaller install base in that region?

?

PS3 is still ahead of the 360 in France, and that's after many months of the 360 outselling the PS3. The 360 was a trainwreck in France until that second price cut last year.

Because it was launched 1.5 years behind the X360 in Europe, and a very high proportion of those PS3s in France are sold in 2008. And the newer a console is, the more eager it's users are to buy software for it.

Second of all the PS3 isn't smaller than the X360 in France, they're about equal (I think PS3 has actually sold 80,000 consoles more, but that's negligible).

The difference between the PS3 and X360 software sales is still bigger than expected though. Perhaps the rest is explained by piracy on the X360 in Europe (at least here in Sweden there's TONS of modded X360s).

Fact One : In France, there are more PS3 than 360, 1.400.000 vs 1.300.000.

Fact Two : Piracy is equal 0 on PS3, is equal a lot on 360.

Conclusion : Sony sold a lot more games than grosoft in France, and when i say a lot, is near 100%. That means piracy is above 50% on 360.

Without the marketing and the dumping, grosoft is near nothing in France. (a lot of rebates have been made during 2008, and since the beginning of 2009)

Those look like very poor numbers of sales for a whole year in a country of that size....... or is it me?

That's why everyone's PR always talks about Europe as a whole rather than individual countries.

To complete what you said, we have in France the DS between 7,3m and 7,4m actually (end of may), but in the link of the OP, they said that the sales of DS games in France have drop a lot in 2009 due to piracy. So Piracy is big too on DS, but it's nothing in comparison to what happen on the psp, where it's very big.

I think it's pretty interesting that while overall the X360 software sales in 2008 being weak in France, Fable II managed to sell 104,000 copies compared to 135,000 copies of MGS4.

Not bad at all by Fable II.

Hardware numbers are in up to May 31st:

It is not any more the euphoria in the video game. At a few days of opening of the Cannes-native professional living room of Idef (June 30 to July 2), LSA got the sales figures of consoles (origin undertaken, GfK source) in France over the first five months of the year. With 700.000 specimens (+8% compared to the same period in 2008) sold of January 1 to May 31, the DS arrives at the head. A light growth to be put for the exclusive benefit of DSi which with it was only sold with 300.000 specimens over the period. Behind, Wii (307 000 specimens) shows a fall of 35% compared to 2008, just like the PS3 (160 000 specimens (- 35%)) and the PSP (104 000 specimens (- 37%)). Only XBox 360 survives (+50% to 176.000 units) in this stagnation. Side plays, the market there too shows the blow with a passing of 12% in value over the first five months of the year. The reasons of such a reversal are undoubtedly with going to seek side of the “line-up” (catalogues of plays) of the consoles at this beginning of year. In 2008, the period had been marked by the exits of the three blockbusters Mario Kart Wii, AWG IV and Wii the FIT. Nothing equivalent this year. The two best sales were precisely carried out by two plays left there are one year (Wii the FIT with 380.000 specimens) and Mario Kart Wii (290 000). The first play left in 2009 in this signal 5 French is Resident Evil 5 on PS3 and XBox 360 which in cumulated was sold with 220.000 units. A nice success which however places it far behind a AWG IV and its 550.000 boxes sold with at the end of June 2008. The remainder of the year (left waited Wii Sport Arises, Wii the FIT More, Assasins' S Creed 2 or Uncharted 2…) will say if the accident of line-up hid a true beginning of recession.

Park installed of consoles in France at the end of May 2009 (origin undertaken, GfK source):

DS: 7,4 million

Wii: 3,2 million

PSP: 2,3 million

PS3: 1,4 million

XBox 360:1,3 million

Big YoY drops for everything but the DS and X360:

@dolemit

rather annoying actaully.... as the UK is the second biggest market in the world.

i still thought japan was bigger?

I find interesting that France and UK are pretty much on par with hardware sales of Wii, DS and PSP.
