Damn is Star Ocean that bad?
My wife loves WRPGs (and of course Oblivion) so she went to go play Tales of Vesperia, but Star Ocean is next on her list. She's gonna cringe to hear my fellow VGCharters detest the SO4 story. Hopefully the combat is still good.
It's just that simple.
Fable II: the game was great but the story was incredibly generic which is too bad because the writing is very good. It doesn't help the characters and the villians were not very interesting.

SO4 was fine (a lot of people hate it because its only on 360)
SO3 is the bad one.
Grandia 3 by far. Most uninteresting thing ever in the history of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....at least it was fun and had Johnny Yong Bosch.

Maybe the thread should have been called let's hate on Star Ocean. Personally I enjoyed the game. I've played it for over 160 hours and the characters really grew on me. The story may not have been anything groundbreaking but it doesn't strike me as anything worse than a B scifi movie. I think a lot of hate for the game exists due to Lymle. She is an odd choice for a character and her voice acting is more or less universally hated. However killing things with an exploding fire dog=Win. I also loved the battle trophies they are like achievements inside achievements. Again I am not saying the story is the best ever but what is it that is so much worse than other RPGs kay? I see no reason why your wife would dislike Star Ocean.

I don't know about that...this was the game that got me into the DQ series. It may have been a cliche kind of story, but it was the character interactions, the jokes, the dialogue and everything that help make the story unique and captivating.
OT: I guess FFX-2 can be counted here...otherwise I don't know...I make it a habit to wipe my memory of bad RPG games with bad stories...

But the character interaction and mini-narratives was horribly cliched too. I mean, how many times have we seen the girl who wants to see the world? The womanizer who's good at heart? The interaction was badly done, the characters are terribly uninspiring. Let alone the villain (probably the worst ever in RPG history). Not a good excuse for a story |
Hey, it's okay. Some people just don't get Dragon Quest games.
On-topic, hmmmmm. Final Fantasy 2 was pretty horrible. So was Lufia: The Ruins of Lore. Secret of Evermore. Chrono Cross (not that bad, just (a) incredibly convuluted, (b) terrible endgame and not even a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger). Fable 1 was pretty bad, as was Kotor II (although an incredible game, it's lack of an endgame keeps this from edging out the original KotOR, and makes the story overall have little to no payoff or impact). Aaaaand I'll conclude the list with the borderline fan-fic quality Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.
