No, silly, using the elemental materia from the shinra HQ on Barrets armor, conjined with level 2 fire, lets him survive the Zolem's Beta attack. Just level up a bit, poision the Zolem with Bio, and put Enemy Skill on Barret. That lets him learn a VERY powerful spell early in the game, and allows you to one shot most of the bosses on disc 1. Very, very fun thing to do, also, and challenging.

I wrote a FAQ on beating the Zolom(sp?) fresh out of Midgar with no powerleveling, once....years ago.

Don't attack the Zolom, just use Bio and defend. That way he can't do a counterattack beta combo at the end, and wipe you out.

...it's a little complex, but so worth it. One of my favorite things in the game.

And another thing... ignore the FF6 bunch, they generally try to flame or just plain abuse Final Fantasy 7 Yes, fight and kill the Midgar Zolom now.  Level up a bit until Barret has his 2nd limit break power, the one that steals MP.  Steal all the Zolom's MP before it gets close to death and tries its final skill, whatever it's called.  Keep your other characters healed and attacking, then kill it when it's out of MP.   You'll feel baller killing it when you were supposed to run from it.  You can still go back and learn its power later in the game. As for 6...it's good, but I think 4 is better.  I like the eerie extraterrestrial control of the supposedly main villain element more than Kefka's mundane megalomania.

if you think everything's good now just wait untill you leave midgar, when you get to kalm though be prepared, there's a cinematic that lasts almost a half hour, and that's only the 3rd longest in the game!

Know that you mention that, I never noticed the length of FF7 cutscenes.

I guess since they were so interesting, I didn't mind watching them.

Just because FF6 is better then FF7 doesn't mean FF7 is a bad game. It's tied for 2nd best with 4 imo.
