His name is Daemon, and that makes him awesome, regardless of what he says.

LOL we're on opposite ends of the spectrum on this one. It'd be funny if he's this scrawny little nerdy guy. Run up on him and punch him in the mouth and be like "I have vanquished the Daemon!"

Y'know, I often visit San Francisco as it is...

Daemon's response:

I'm On Your Side

Wow, a lot of people flipped the fuck out after i called the Wii "stupid" on last week's Game Scoop! I was pretty surprised by the response, as this is hardly a controversial statement. The Wii was supposed to be a GameCube peripheral. Then Nintendo decided it wanted to turn the gimmick into its own system. The result is a library of outdated, contrived games that many of us don't want to play. There are definitely great games for the system, and i fully support them. World of Goo was one of my favorite games last year. I play Boom Blox regularly. Tomorrow Swords & Soldiers is coming out on WiiWare and i gave it an 8.9. But all of these games could have been GameCube or "WiiHD" titles played with a motion control peripheral.

On the IGN podcasts you'll find the editors at their most relaxed, casual, and honest. It is, in fact, the perfect environment for me to share my opinion that the Wii is stupid. And that's all it is: my opinion. What do you care if i think it's stupid? I'm not pushing an agenda. I'm not trying to take your Wii away from you. If you're happy with your Wii, that's great.

What bothers me most about the reaction is that gamers don't seem to realize i'm on their side. I've been a Nintendo fan all my life; Mario 64 and Majora's Mask are my favorite games of all time. You and i deserve better than what Nintendo is delivering these days. Nintendo used to be the company we could count on to bring us the most technologically advanced games, packed full of the most fun and interesting game mechanics anywhere. When it arrived in 1998, Ocarina of Time was probably the greatest achievement in videogames' short lifespan. What do we have now? An underpowered system that adds goofy waggle controls to last-generation games. As i said, some developers are still producing great games with this modest hardware. But the other systems are moving the industry forward with Fallout 3, Dead Space, The Orange Box, Modern Warfare, God of War III, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Alan Wake...

All of this is, of course, still just my opinion.

The other problem is that all the anger is aimed at me, despite the fact that most of the other podcast participants agreed with me. And the IGN Nintendo team is constantly calling the Wii and Nintendo out on everything that is wrong with the platform. They might not have come right out and called it "stupid," but you're just arguing semantics at this point. And to anyone who thinks we were being mean to Levi: Levi is one of my favorite people in the world. We're great friends. He's a big boy and can handle a little spirited discussion -- unlike a lot of people out there.

A lot of comments on the podcast article feel it is unfair to call the Wii stupid without backing up my argument. To this i can only sigh, because i've been very vocal for a couple years now about all the problems I see with the system. In countless podcasts and articles on IGN i've related what a disappointment i think it is and why. once again for the hard of hearing: it's an underpowered gimmick system that plays ugly last-gen games (with a few notable exceptions).

But if you like your Wii, I think that's great. I have to wonder, though: if you're secure with your purchase why are you spending time and energy commenting on message boards about how upset you are? If you like the Wii, what do you care what i think? To get all bent out of shape makes you seem insecure -- as if, deep down, you know I'm right.

Malstrom's take:

An Expression of the Hardcore Mind

It is not that the Hardcore are stupid. It is that they know much that isn’t so. Daemon from IGN, apparently responding to the ‘attacks’ on him due the comments he made about Wii gaming in general, said this:

"Wow, a lot of people flipped the fuck out after i called the Wii “stupid” on last week’s Game Scoop! I was pretty surprised by the response, as this is hardly a controversial statement. The Wii was supposed to be a GameCube peripheral. Then Nintendo decided it wanted to turn the gimmick into its own system. The result is a library of outdated, contrived games that many of us don’t want to play. There are definitely great games for the system, and i fully support them. World of Goo was one of my favorite games last year. I play Boom Blox regularly. Tomorrow Swords & Soldiers is coming out on WiiWare and i gave it an 8.9. But all of these games could have been GameCube or “WiiHD” titles played with a motion control peripheral."

This is not even factually accurate. The Wii was not just an overclocked Gamecube with a motion controller bolted on. The Wii was a business solution to the slow collapse of core gaming which is going on as we speak. Was the DS just two Gameboy Advance screens with a touch screen on it? Of course not.

You can’t expect a game journalist to know the business details behind a console, but they should understand the essentials. Everyone understood what Sony intended to do with the PlayStation 3 or Microsoft did with Xbox 360. So why are people so stuck on stupid when it comes to the Wii?

It is interesting to note that he got into Nintendo consoles with the N64 (which is the time I got out!).

The Hardcore differs from the Core gamer in that the Hardcore are actively hostile to the Expanded Market. The Core are not hostile to the Expanded Market. The Core simply wants Core games. As long as they get those, they don’t care about the Expanded Market. But even with Core games, the Hardcore oddly attacks Expanded Market gamers (which includes yours truly).

Daemon ends it by saying:

"But if you like your Wii, I think that’s great. I have to wonder, though: if you’re secure with your purchase why are you spending time and energy commenting on message boards about how upset you are? If you like the Wii, what do you care what i think? To get all bent out of shape makes you seem insecure — as if, deep down, you know I’m right."

Someone sounds oddly defensive here as well as self-contradicting. Usually when I dislike something, I don’t go around saying how much I dislike it or speak of it in flame bait ways. Nor would I make a blog post implying any criticism of me is because the criticizer is insecure. It is classless… just as most hardcore gamers are. When are these fools going to realize that the classic Nintendo fans don’t make up the Wii audience?

I feel like that guy who carries a pooper scooper when following a dog, the dog being a game journalist like this. When I make articles or posts, I am essentially doing nothing more than picking up the unadulterated crap that these ‘journalists’ are laying. And for what? So they can squirt out more and make another mess before running somewhere else and doing it again? I am tired of following these mutts.

Daemon doesn’t have a clue why people are criticizing him. It isn’t because he dislikes the Wii. It is because he is a game journalist yet is so uninformed. His comments sound as if they were written on a YouTube video for a Wii game. Worse, Daemon is spreading out misinformation. He hasn’t a clue why the Wii was made. But he thinks he does. And that is the problem.

As a bonus, check out the comments. There are a couple of viral messengers who, without warning, begin spreading the gospel of Natal! Oh, it is so funny. They don’t realize how obvious they stick out. Try reading them and see if you can spot them!

His response is funny, and kinda true

Lol, and humans are the smartest species in the world? More like the dumbest. Oh, and I fail to see how dual analog would make super mario galaxy better. It would make it a lot worse. Good luck controlling yoshi and collecting star bits with your dual analogs.

the same comments we see every day from anti wii journalist
