Usually these updates are requried but it seems optional. Like when you sign in it tells you to update but it didn't do it for me so i went to the update part and there it was. Is there something different about this one?

I just installed it but I haven't noticed anything different yet. Probably just a normal update.
The in game xmb loads half a secound faster, and now all the icons pop up at the same time, also the trophies are about a secound faster loading wise
strange they'd use a full 2.80 instead of a 2.7x for this
Oh well.
Updates are updates I suppose.

Well I can say 2.8 is either out now or will be in a few hours.

Some might consider it a minor update but it isnt. It actually coincides with another major update.

Its a driver update. Driver updates can improve overall performance of games on the system. Even the old laggy games released at launch will probably feel the effect of this because it can improve stability of the content.
@ssj12
"coincides with another major update" ....?
does that mean this is the major update or that there's another just around the corner I wonder?

did you not read my second link.... it links to an article about the new Nvidia GPU drivers for PC. Those are always important for a ton of PC users gamers or not. They are major updates in terms of what they do.
This update coincides with the PC Nvidia driver update meaning it improves graphical performance because the PlayStation 3's RSX is based on Nvidia G74(?, the later 7xxx series) GPU architecture.
