Forums - Gaming Discussion - Your favorite works of Gaming Music

Nobuo Uematsu, Harry Gregson-Williams, Motoi Sakuraba. We've all heard these names before, they are the names of some of the greatest composurers to gaming. Something that is often not given enough credit. Music, music in gaming is important. It's the only thing I value almost as much as Gameplay. Because with great music, you can tell a great story. Without even using words, video, cutscenes, or anything.

Music gets you excited for whats happening, it sets the mood and helps you feel what the characters are feeling. Music helps lift the enviroment from a dusty dry desert into something you may consider to be a adventure. (Listen Below)

Thoughout gaming music has been a very centalized part of it, previously in generations where graphic quality wasn't as good as it is today. Developers relied alot on music to close the gap between what's happening and what the characters are feeling. As visually seeing it wasn't as easy. Although recently we've seen music and soundtracks take a smaller role in game design as more resources are devoted to new things, one cannot forget how important music is today.

For myself, I value music to be more important than graphics themselves. Where as graphics tells you the specifics of the story, what, Who, how, where, why. Music tells you the feeling behind that story, and without music. Everything would be empty and cold.

So I create this thread in order to ask you. VGChartz, what is your favorite works of Gaming Music to you? Why are these pieces so important? And if you can, please find a link or embed a source of said music for all of us to enjoy.

As for myself, the single greatest piece of music to ever grace my ears from a video game. Is the theme from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

This song by Harry Gregson-Williams is undoubtably a masterpiece. Even if you don't like the Metal Gear Solid series, you have to be able to at least enjoy the depth of emotion, action, suspense, and everything else this piece of art provides.

What about you VGC?

Why must JRPG female leads suck so bad?

Not the best but this track has been stuck in my head for a little over a week and it's pretty underrated.

Very powerful track, meshs the feel of the seas and space in one.  Its the kind of music that works well with voyages, odysseys, etc.

Makes me think of Autumn for some reason.  Peaceful in all its 8-bit wonder.

Very 90's-ish.  I just plain love this track.

This one makes me teary strangely enough.

Very versatile track.  Makes me think of espionage.. urgency.. and other stuff.

Pixel Art can be fun.

These are some of my top favs

Man, you wouldn't know how important music is to me. Classics are remembered because of their themes, and with that said, it should be one of the most important things to consider when reviewing games and making them. I also like to listen to video game music remixes and I made a thread about it a long time ago with some of the best pieces out there. You guys should definitely check it out: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=32671

I like mostly all songs from Capcom, Konami and Nintendo. Even this generation there have been amazing music in video games, and I even listed my personal top 10 game soundtracks for this generation:

#1: Bionic Commando Rearmed;
#2: Contra IV;
#3: Super Smash Bros. Brawl;
#4: Super Mario Galaxy;
#5: Bionic Commando;
#6: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3;
#7: Gears of War;
#8: Halo 3;
#9: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots;
#10: The Last Remnant.

Here are a few of my favorite music from video games:

Simply magical. You know you're going to kick some ass in there!

You feel like there's a war going on, and you're the badass that have to save the world.

I think Twilight Princess had the best theme out of all the Zelda games.

My mom cried when she heard this the first time. It's a moving piece that's for sure!

It's Mega Man with a more mature tone, at least that's how I felt when listening to this for the first time.

Good old Contra is back baby! xD

This song has the good old Konami feel to it. I love it!

I know many more... so if anyone's interested in listening more from the best soundtracks out there, feel free to ask me! =P

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
