Really? Wizardry was very close to paper D&D. Never thought of JRPG's to be paper D&D like.

That's what Dragon Quest changed.  While Ultima and Wizardry were very close to D&D, and very detailed, they were also somewhat hard to play.  Especially Ultima.

Dragon Quest basically took insperation from Wizardry's first person party model and combined it with Ultima's exploration and detail.  While creating its own style (due in large part to the pairing up of Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama) and making the interface quite a bit more simple.

Pretty much, Dragon Quest is one of the few 'WRPG' feeling JRPGs.

Cool, I will look into it.

I still remember when my Mage learned Tiltawat in Wizardry. I miss those days.

An old-school style WRPG is Drakensang for PC. It´s not awesome, but it fits to the description. It´s based upon the german p&p RPG "The Dark Eye". It has various races with various classes to choose from and turn-based combat in real-time.

All old series of JRPGs have roots from old computer RPGs. The exceptions are probably action JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, Legend of Mana, Tales, Star Ocean. It still doesn´t mean an old-school WRPG fan will like them, since the style and themes were changed to fit the japanese audience. If you play and like DQ then you could check the old Final Fantasies, Breath of Fire, Lufia, Suikoden and others.

I remember when I discovered in Wizardry that you could duplicate gold and items by making extra copies of the data file and abusing character import function. For an old school game, google Swords of Aragon.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

This Gen Games

Oblivion, Fallout 3 , Mass Effect, Fable II, The Witcher (PC)

Games from the past: Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Arcanum, Pool of Radiance, Planescape Torment (Perfect Game, i recommend it) and there is loads moe

Played them all (The Witcher only the demo. Couldn't get into it).

Oh, and aside from Fable II (I started that a week ago), I played them all on the PC :)

I think you should give Witcher a try then (havent played the demo so i dont know how good it was, but hte game itself is amazing), its easily my favourite RPG this generation (me being a fan of Witcher books also contributes to it, Sapkowski is a genius fantasy writer) but this is a really mature RPG that deals with many issues like racism, xenophobia, politics , parenting . Choices arent clear like in other games (good/bad) they much more complicated then that, sometimes forcing the choice of lesser evil, and it helps that the game is extremely non linear.

Apart from that, you've probably played majority of Good WRPG's on the Market, so why not try some JRPG's? Maybe Lost Odyssey? (havent played it myself yet, but i've heard a lot of good stuff about it)

Betrayal at Krondor was fantastic, but it's been a long time since I played it and I don't know how well it holds up. Might be worth looking into. Sounds like you've played just about all the big ones, though. Hopefully Jade Empire and Fable II can keep you occupied until the next wave of WRPGs hits. (Dragon Age: Origins, Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect 2)

Just finished Jade Empire. Great game. The story was great. I could tell it had a lot in common with Mass Effect. Same basic layout (even though it lacked the production value).

Thanks Khuutra for recommending it. Now on to finish Fable II :)
