Forums - Sony Discussion - Activision threatens to "stop supporting" Sony consoles.

"Bear in mind there's a degree of saber-rattling to this, but still; Activision boss Bobby Kotick has warned Sony that his company - the world's largest third-party publisher - may cease support the PS3 and PSP.

Speaking with The Times, Kotick said "I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation".

Subtle. But wait. It gets subtler.

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow", he continues. "If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony...When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP [portable] too".

In that absolute worst-case scenario, that would mean no Call of Duty for Sony consoles. No Guitar Hero for Sony consoles. No Tony Hawk, either. It probably won't ever come to that, of course, but Kotick's words are still worth noting. After all, when was the last time you ever saw a third-party publisher so openly threaten a major platform holder?"

This, on top of the Brutal Legend thing and the milking of their franchises.

I'm starting to dislike Activision.

Foul words, lets just hope it never comes that far even though its likely it will never even come close to that..

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Seems extreme. Maybe for niche titles but I'm sure they easily make their money back on CoD and GH games

Last time something like this happened for real was when EA stopped supporting Sega or when square betrayed Nintendo (although I can't blame square, the game they wanted to make just wasn't possible on the N64). This is why I hate most third parties.

It's a shame that Blizzard has anything to do with Activision, the best third party and one of the worst working together.

I LOVE ICELAND!

He's talking out of his ass. Still he's not the only person frustrated with Sony's pricing strategy.

Now we're starting to see how feasible the 10-year plan is. (we already knew, but now we can actually see it)

Wow, that would be a crushing blow to Sony. Could you imagine the fanboy suicide rates?

Does Activision really think they can strong arm Sony into lowering the price? They are insane if they think they can. Sony is clearly doing what is best for their company and to try and force them into dropping the price when it is financially impossible is little more than a shady black mail attempt if you ask me. If Sony was capable of dropping the price they would have done so already, so all the fanboys and now even Activision just needs to let this go. They will drop the price when they can damn it!

I don't see this really ever happening, and I think to some degree this just confirms what everyone already knows ( the PS3 is a bitch to program for). Activision must be getting tired of having significantly more investment and less return on their PS3 products.

Could you imagine any 3rd party developer saying something like this about the PS2 last gen? That shows you really how far the Playstation brand has fallen. And how much the Wii and X360 have risen.

"If you've got them by the balls their hearts and minds will follow."

If they wanted to stop supporting ps3 they could have done it a long time ago back when ps3 was selling horribly in 2007 and with a much lower userbase.
