It is already official that a PS3 + Spiderman 3 bundle will be announced in Italy on the 12th next month! I posted a thread about that already, it was confirmed by a Sony Italy person:

A PS3 @ 399$ with 5 free Blue-Ray Movies is going to be a smash hit @ sales.

Many PS2 owners haven't still jumped onto the PS3 bandwagon and a 399$ pricetag might be just enough to entice them. Sony needs to time it for the Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted releases. Tagging along third parties for bundles might reinforce thier commitment to the console.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

I think people are being a bit too optimistic with those predictions regarding prices... Do you really think Sony has the nerve and financial capability to drop the price to 399 €/$ soon?

In their last financial conference they said that they expected to achieve profitability in hardware "later rather than sooner"... A 399 € price in Europe means a 200 € (or 33%) drop! I don't think it's impossible, but it's certainly not very realistic.

What's your point? Don't you think that's rather late for them to think about a 33% price drop in Europe 7 months after launch?

Just asking, not meaning to take a jab or anything...

I think it's plausible, and a very wise move on Sony's part.  The both the system war and the format war are dependent on the success of the ps3.  Given the ps3s lagging sales and the recent announcement of Paramount's HD DVD exclusivity, it's a necessity for them to drop the drop teh price before the year is out, at least in EU and Japan where the price has yet to be dropped, if not for a second time in NA.

I can see Japan pushing 40k.  If Hot Shots could push the system to 38k for a week, a price drop could do better.

I checked the exchange rates, and actually, 399EUR is real possibility, because 1 EUR now equals $1.40 US. So that 399EUR price tag is the equivalent of $559 US - a steep drop from the current 599EUR ($839) price tag for European PS3s but very close to breakeven on the hardware, thanks to some efficient cost-reduction.

The good news for consumers is, Sony doesn't have any pressing reason to reduce any of the functionality of the system.  All those card readers and slots should stay, they're quite cheap. There might be a smaller harddrive, is all, but you can replace that with a bigger one or just hook up an external drive.

For christ's sake, can they just stick with one or two SKUs, keep them on shelves, and slash prices? Putting a different number in front of the letters "GB" isn't going to spike sales the way they think it will.

Stop being a fanboy and overreacting over nothing.  They all play the same games the same way, nothing like Microsofts 360 sku debacle.
