It's not just about how many references there are.. it's how the games use them. Mass Effect won awards for its story telling..... and from what i've read of reviews of Xenosaga... they tell it badly and seem to want to make the story seem deeper than it is...

Hmmm. Gta iv got 10/10 on extremely many gaming-sites. Did it deserve it?

Show me the review that says Xenosaga`s story-telling is bad. Just show me.

I`ve tried to describe some ways Xenosaga uses the references in the game in a positive way, but it seems to have been ignored. Espesially by a certain person with Devil-Jin as avatar claiming mass effect have better story without beeing able to prove it. I have proved why xenosaga have a good story.

Play the game...only then can you either truly speak or even finally admit that you were wrong.

I`m still trying my best to ignore the person that can`t explain why a game have a good story.

Citan, thoses novels that you refer to that are used in Xenosaga, where do they come from? Did they make reference to another novel?? When the other poster said that a story needs to stand on its own is trying to say that good writing doesn't have to be taken from another source. A good story that has all the elements you want can come without having to reference a novel. If we needed to take use other sources to be able to create something good then society would be dead as a whole because new ideas or the evolution of our cultures would not be used on new writings.

So Mass Effect story doesn't have to be inspired by other cultural works, if the writers for Mass Effect are excellent writers then they can create the story and add all those things that you so desire in a storyline.

What genre is mass effect? Science fiction? Where do science fiction come from? A story is always inspired by something, right?

Did you read my reply on why the references makes the story good?

Wrpgs win for sure. Great gameplay, stories, and sales. Great wrpgs: Fable 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Mass Effect. Wrpgs like Final Fantasy are only popular

Also anime in games isnt exactly popular outside of Japan. Hardcore Otaku's should just watch their animee/manga and enjoy games wheter its a jrpg or wrpg.

WRPGs did not get good till the xbox generation

also lol Diablo.

JRPG's by far,Though WRPG this gen for me though.

This gen:WRPGs
All time:JRPGs

Great JRPGs were plentiful during the SNES,PS1, and to a lesser extend the PS2 eras. They just don't make them like they use to. This isn't even including ones like TWEWY and Persona 4.

I swear you must be truly trolling if you can't grasp the concept of getting ideas that are NOT from other works. You're right, a story does not come from nothing, one gets inspired by seeing, reading, hearing, tasting, living. But that doesn't mean the story must be solely based on great pieces of literature to be great. If a person has a great imagination he/she will come up with a great story just by looking out the window of his/her house, not from those novels you keep talking about. If you can't admit that, then go back to your closet and keep reading them. I'll enjoy new things meanwhile and celebrate that are many great things in life besides Xenosaga

I know I'm going to get flamed for this but...

JRPG are trash, WRPG wins this easily.
