That Fox Cobra is the reason I'm buying the game lol.

The car models in this game look amazing, and I will probably end up buying it. The lighting / shading could be better though, the cars just seem a bit artificial sometimes, and it's certainly not because of their shapes which look perfect...

Turn 10's fathoms-deep racer is almost upon us, and it was on display at Microsoft's Gamescom 2009 booth with some extra gear strapped down in front of the television set. Pedals for the gas and brake were mounted in front of a force feedback steering wheel set just above a comfortable legless gaming chair. It was quite the setup, though because I wasn't really familiar with the way a force feedback wheel hits you (it jams the wheel depending on which way your car may be sliding), the first few minutes of my session were a little on the embarrassing side. Once I got through the initial hurdle, didn't slam the gas all the way to the floor, and actually tried to drive instead of just go fast, it was a much smoother experience.

If you're curious at all what attendees of the show will be playing, I'll describe it below. The build I checked out first let you pick from several cars, which I'll list below.

  • 2009 Jaguar XKR-5
  • 2009 Cadillac CTS V
  • 2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
  • 2009 Aston Martin DBS
  • 2009 Mercedes SL AMG Black Series
  • 2006 Chevrolet Corvette 206
  • 2006 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
  • 2005 Ford GT
  • 2010 Audi R8 V10
  • 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640
  • 2009 Porsche 911 GT2 (1997)

After picking a car (I chose the Audi for no particular reason), the game asks you to pick a color and difficulty setting. Depending on how good you think you are, it's possible to toggle options for assists like auto-brake, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, shifting, and the suggested line. This line comes into play when rounding corners, showing you a best path, something which any newcomers to racing games should appreciate.

Along the lines of trying to ease in newbies to this more hardcore racing experience is a rewind feature. At any point during a you can spin back tme to whenever you want. The game will pause after a little bit of a rewind and ask if you want to keep moving back or simply resume, so it's up to you where you want to dive back into the action. Should you only roll back a minimal amount, or should you try that entire turning sequence all over again? It should be a nice feature for those who like to obsessively run through segments of track to find just the right line.

Three courses were available in the build, including the Ladera Test Track, Iberian International Circuit (which I chose) and the Camino Viejo de Montserrat Circuit. On the Iberian course things didn't get too hairy. It featured a few moderately challenging turns here and there as I sped past rocky cliffs under a bright sky with grass shoulders lining the pavement. Since I was still a little shaky with the wheel, it also wasn't a rare occurrence for me to bump into something, be it another driver or a wall. Then, as I pulled away and went through the next lap unharmed, I was forcefully reminded of my errors as the camera pulled out for a fly by as the finish time list was posted, showing all the damage I'd done to one of my headlights.

Forza's on the way late this October, and after a short time with the game I'm excited to pick it up and dig into all the cars, customization options, and other features not present in the demo.

That is a weird looking audi!!  Never seen a car that looks like that.

Oh so there is a audi that looks like that.  Wonder if all the ruffles on the backside of the car are to help with aerodynamics and such.

And at first I thought this was another Forza 3 pic!  Guess that goes to show you how realistic this game looks.
