Forums - Website Topics - Malware + Spyware + poorly coded background links = VGChartz

Welcome to my world... I and others have had our computers compromised while browsing VGChartz several times (and yes I use firefox).

After the redesign I haven't gotten hit again yet, but the old site was horrible... I had my browser hijacked several times, and once I even got a really nasty trojan that, among other things, deleted my system restore checkpoints so that I couldn't go back to a safe restore point! That's the reason why I avoided this website like the plague for the past several months (and still do for the most part).

BTW, I totally agree with OP's avatar!

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Around the Network

This has never happened to me either, I used to get pop-ups from time to time, but that was because of a hijacking program I had on my computer that wasn't from here.

AVG Free now has something called "Total Protection" Basically it protects you from sites you click on, and sites you type in your URL bar. Just download the 8.5 version. Not to mention the awesome Web Shield.

I'll tell you right now that I get 0 viruses. No problems at all.

Also, if you want to take an extra step, download Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition which has Ad-Watch Live which stops bad processes from occuring, even if you're just loading up your PC.

Those, along with Firefox and Adblock Plus makes for some mean protection.

True dat Soriku, and also Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software is awesome should you run into a particularly nasty virus or trojan but don't want to have to wipeout your system in order to get rid of it.

Still, doesn't change the fact that this site does indeed have some questionable ads that link to shady websites.  Up until the redesign, it was safer to surf porn websites than this site!

browsing any website is dangerous, and even google ads are known to spread malware and google ads are everywhere. My work doesn't even like CNN because someone got a virus attack from surfing there (and yes we know, because our internet security is extremely tight). Trusting any anti-virus software is stupid, and you should really use firefox with no-script. The vast majority of viruses/trojans/whatever are caused by XSS or cross site scripts. no-script blocks all of these by default. If you set no-script up right, you are vastly safer across the net and no-script is invisible to the user.

This website was started as a hobby site and has grown. While growing, we have started using giantrealms as our advertising partner. Giantrealms is much more reliable than the original ads, but their requirements are stricter than the junky ads. Due to this, we can't just simply jump from the old ads to new ads immediately. From what I can see (I don't deal with this) the partnership with giantrealms is expanding. Hopefully if this takes off we can completely drop the old questionable ads.

If you have a problem with a specific ad, send an e-mail to admin@vgchartz.com containing information regarding where you are browsing from (this is a global site with various ads per region), the ad in question, and where on the website it was located.
