Forums - Sony Discussion - PS EYE and EYE of judgment gameplay

@ Girl Gamer Elite )

I will explain my off-topic complaints to you in a private message :)

So to your comments which have to do with the topic:

- the first eye toy showed, that a completely optional and quite expensive peripheral can very well be really successful , although you may argue ,that the next generation might not bring enough advantages to come close to the success of it's predecessor

- I wonder what you and others here would consider to be a "flop" .. if anything below Halo 3 first day sales is a "flop" it will "flop" for sure :) , but if it's whether or not it shows the system is (1.) practicable ,(2.) fun and (3.) financially sensible even with a completely new game (no established franchise) ,I think this may very well be a "success" ... the people who created this aren't dumb enough to use an unreasonable amount of budget , so I think it can break even with just ~100k of worldwide sales ,which are definately in range even with small userbase of 4.6-4.8 million

- it's always said ,that the PS3 userbase only plays hardcore games , but in my opinion even "hardcore users" play other games and I don't see why this may not be one of those , although as a former card gamer with over 1500 Magic Cards I have to add ,that I think these kind of card games are pretty "hardcore" aswell

In my opinion it's a shame ,that overall there is so much of a negative attitude in your and ofcourse in many of the other comments to this topic - this innovative concept doesn't derserve that much distrust before it's even released , especially not from the open minded and innovation loving nintendo community.

out of all that most people will just see those words because they believe all new games/franchises flop, like Gears of War did. lol

Gears of War wasn't a big gamble like the Ps-Eye, no matter how you try and spin it. Gears of War didn't require a peripheral and had a ready made demographic for its genre.

And I'm the fangirl?... sigh...

So tell me, what will you say if the PS-Eye doesn't live up to expectations?

The ps eye wont live up to expectations at this time, Nobody needs it for anything. Why waste your money?

This isn't a franchise, ssj, it's the bastardchild (excuse the harsh sound of it, but the term is correct) of a card game that assumes its players know nothing about card games, and an overpriced piece of hardware that adds nothing to the game itself but "ooh look, it's breathing".

A card game should involve cards and nothing else. It NEEDS nothing else.  The cost of all the equipment necessary just to start your first game is absurd.

This game will flop.

you dont need the equipment.. or a PS3 for that matter.. its just enhanced by the PS3/PSEye. The game is completely standalone.

6. Depending on how in depth the bar code is, I can't see it being all difficult for some company rather than selling the correct printed cards, a blank card with a bar code for any card you want.

I spent a couple of years coding commercial image recognition systems for banks/cheque recognition.

Cheques all use MICR - magnetically encoded ink. That's basically the only sort of thing that could stop card piracy with this - but its impossible due to the nature of the PSeye.

It wouldn't be long before web sites pop up with high definition images of *every* released card. You download the image, print them out on a decent printer - cut them out - and you have your own fake cards.

I just cannot possibly see how Sony can stop this. The only way would be for *every* card to have some form of unique ID, and when you buy a pack you register the pack online to your username.

But that would suck as well - the physical cards + Eye would *really* become redundant, you would be unable to give/swap cards with friends, etc.

The other option would be for the Eye to be a lot more than a camera - with the ability to maybe send out pulses(?) of certain frequencies, which only non-visual elements bounce back (i.e. something within the card).

...

Maybe Sony is just banking on the fact that people are just too lazy, and wouldn't bother to do this.

I don't think this game can flop. I mean even if a relativly small number of "dorks" buy this... the whole "buying cards" things are guranteed to make a profit even if the PS eye can't stop proxies.

I mean aside from "offical" tournaments it's not like you couldn't just write down the stats for proxies for other trading card games.

Trading card games are one of the best legal scams out there as far as profit margin goes. Wizards of the Coast do this best of course, for example, there Magic Pro-tour, and how lots of people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on Pro-tour stuff. If they get some official support like that... watch out.

Me. I enjoy trading card games. However only play videogame versions of them. So I won't be getting this game. Reason being i'm either too smart or too cheap to spend 4+ dollars on boosters where i'm guranteed that 70+ percent of the cards are going to be worthless to me.

Yeah... you could spend a couple grand on yu-gi-oh cards.

Or... you could get one of the many yu-gi-oh games for GBA or DS. Then you get all the cards up to that booster set for the price of the game. Play people online... etc, just by playing through the game a few times.

Which is why people are complaining. Console and portable CCGS and TCGS come free with the game. Sony and Wizards of the coast could of went with this option as well. The cards and PS eye are just included so you have to buy the cards and the PS eye.

Since the PS3 has a harddrive other cards could of been added in expansion patches, or expansion PSN downloads for money if they want to make money off it.

It won't flop... I mean wizards of the coast are behind this game (magic)... This game could open the gate for other card games that are popular today. Sony has an open field to explore if this is the case... ie Yugioho etc

Coming from someone who played magic at a fairly high level for a decent length of time I can tell you that WoTC, while the publisher of Magic, is not the creator. That honor goes to Richard Garfield who iirc no longer makes games for the company. And last I heard he is focusing more on computer games and not so much on card games.

If it turns out Garfield is behind the game it will have a lot of weight in my opinion on that alone. The guy is a genius when it comes to developing CCGs and most don't know that Magic, while his most succesful, is not his only CCG. And its far from his only game. One of his best games is actually Werewolf which requires nothing more than a small slip of paper for each person playing and a pen to write on the paper. Easily one of the most fun games you can play late at night with friends.

PS - I am not 100% sure if Werewolf is actually his game but he is the one I learned it from so I always assumed it was his creation.

AFAIK (and I used to know more) Richard Garfield hasn't had any major input into MTG since Fallen Empires and he hasn't done anything for them for nine years or so. Skaff Elias and then Mark Rosewater took over as the lead developers. I would be interested if someone like Rosewater (or even Randy Buehler) was involved in this.

At what high level did you play MTG? Pro Tour?
