Once graphics have reached their peak, i'm sure the "story" portion of gaming will make a triumphant return.

If that happened, I'd quit gaming.

Pixel Art can be fun.

and the ironic part of this thread is as graphics hit their limit then games will need to rely on gameplay and nobody makes gameplay like Nintendo!

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

This is only true if you play nothing but Nintendo games.

Plus, there's so many directions where games can go. Scope, AI, storytelling, plot.

It's not like all there's to videogaming is "gameplay" in the game mechanics sense.

Graphics is the single most important factor which distinguishes generations of gaming...in fact the whole fun factor, thrills, story, immersion or whatever present in games of all generations but graphics is the one which describes the words 'natural progression' for games.

The formula isn't perfect, first of all it's essentially only really valid for comparing 3d games. So if you compare NES or SNES games you have a fairly limited choice.

There's also an actual upper limit dependant on the viewers eyesight.

As for the Wii being at 0.5-1, thatseems too low. That is saying that making the Wii twice as powerful would make the games look almost twice as 'good' Clearly the N64 was at least a 0.25, gamecube 1 and Wii about 1.5

I have played all games from a zx80 through to this gen including PC but if there's one thing I have learnt Nintendo have the best games. Once the graphics have hit their limits then we will see which companies are good and not, I look forward to that day very much

I beg to differ, this generation has changed that perception I believe yes graphics did play a part until this generation but now controls and graphics from now on. Thanks to Nintendo the videogame universe has made a fantastic jump. The jump is a lot further than just watching pretty graphics this generation is like watching the first consoles coming out again.

And I was there :D

Your opinion about the "best games" is perfectly fine with me.

I take it that you don't like RTSs, Hack and Slash games, simulators, shooters, RPGs, MMO games. Nor any game with a dark, disturbing or mature setting.

Because a lot of people do, even discounting graphics improvements, and Nintendo isn't going to cater their needs - unless they completely subvert a 25-years-old history.

@ werekitten

RTS
Pikmin franchise (it's not a cnvention rts, but that is its genre)
Battalion Wars franchise

Hack and Slash - Get a real genre and get back to me. Hack and Slash is merely a way of saying 'a bad Action/Adventure game' and Nintendo have plenty of good Action Adventure games

Simulators
Animal Crossing
Nintendogs
Wii series
Honestly, what were you thinking?

Shooters
Responding to 'shooters' would be too easy. Actually, I'll do it anyway
Link's Crossbow traing
Duck Hunt
Pokemon Snap
Sin and Punishment

Although I will admit that if we are being more specific, perhaps FPS, then Nintendo does not really provide any. This I will give to you, because I fell bad havnig shut down your other points so easily :P

RPGs
lol
Pokemon
Fire Emblem
Mario and Luigi
Paper Mario
Golden Sun
Mother
Again, why did you do this to yourself?

MMO
Hey, you get a second point

Final Score Me 4 You 2

The PS3 graphics capability is probably the near endpoint as far as i'm concerned. Better graphics will indeed produce diminishing returns on investment. What next is better physics, better AI, more fluid dynamics in the background (the tree/grass moves in the win, or tall grass gets squished down when you step over it), etc. That will easily require 10x if not 100x times more power than we currently have.
