Forums - Microsoft Discussion - IMO: A few reasons why Halo 3 might wind up with 15m+ units sold

@Don Wii
You sure Super Mario Galaxy will sale 18M. I will hold you on that bet.

@Etech7
There are alot of 360 and Halo 3 haters, I agree, but then again its peoples bias opinions, so I ignore something you should do and not worry about those people.

@Etech7,

Well, its always nice to have a microsoft fanboy join...

@W29,

I doubt you will remember that/me be around here/you be around here five years from now.

UT3 will kill halo3 sales in 08 and the casuals you would need will be buying GTA.

Halo3 wont break 10 million, 15 is in a universe far far away.

It will be hard for halo3 to go far beyond halo2, for several reasons. Halo2 was the best game on the xbox, it had the best online and some of the best graphics on the system, it even looks better then some wii games. Halo3 is way down on the list for Graphics and thats just on the 360 not even counting the PS3, Halo3 also has to deal with alot of very good games that have online play, CoD4 and Gears of War are very good games.

Well I've been on this site so many times now that I decided to register and bring my input into this thread.

People who have replied on this thread have already posted the same thoughts I've had. To think Halo 3 will sell 15 is utterly insane. Sorry Mrstickball but you are caught up in the hype. It's real easy to say Halo 3 will not sell.

1) It doesn't catch a broad audience with it's rating. It's not E for everyone. Parent's WILL retrict their kids as well as the store.

2) It doesn't sell enough worldwide. Hence the long lines in Japan.

3) "Hype will die down" and you will kick yourself for thinking such a high number.

Another look. Just because Spider Man 3 broke weekend records didn't mean it was going to sink the Titanic. Same with Star Wars Episode 3. And Pirates 2. Yes Halo 3 did 170 million on one day or whatever those numbers are; it does't mean it's going to sell 15 million copies. If you think that I will say it again, "You are caught up in the hype."

Halo 3 has to do good worldwide to even approach those numbers and it's not going to happen. Sorry!!!

There's only 2 real CONSOLE games (according to THIS site) that have made over 15 million without being packins: Super mario bros 3 and Super Mario World.
I got my SNES with Super Mario World as a packin and I am pretty sure I saw SMB3 as a packin.

currently playing: Desktop Tower Defense (PC), Puzzle Quest (DS), Trauma Center New Blood (Wii), Guitar Hero III (Wii), Ghost Squad (Wii), Actraiser (SNES), Donkey Kong County (SNES), The Legend of Zelda (NES), Kirby's Adventure (NES)

will play next: Paper Mario (N64), Golden Axe II (Sega), NiGHTS (Wii)

Halo doesn't have the broad appeal that a game like mario, mario kart, or smash bros does. Over 10 million is just going too far. Perhaps if 360 sold 120 million consoles it would be possible. Seriously there is very diminishing returns on expanding userbases, that is why PS2 can't seem to barely use any of the userbase for a particular game. Most of the people that wanted Halo last gen got it, if 360 did expand it's user base beyond 30 million you would be tapping into a new crowd that mostly don't care that much about FPS. You would be tapping into RPG geeks, women, kids, older people etc.

Bingo.

Also, contrary to the hype fever that Halo 3 is the greatest game in history and nothing comes close to it the fact is Halo 3 has more significant competition this time around than Halo or Halo 2.  When Halo came out it was well known as the one console FPS that got single player it right.  Halo 2 wouldn't have done very well in a single player competition as other games had at least caught up with it but being the only console FPS that did online multiplayer right more than made up for it.  Unlike Halo or Halo 2, Halo 3 is not going to dominate either category.  It's too early to say but UT3 or CoD4 could possibly even have better online multiplayer.  Another problem will be that the hardcore FPS crowd has a higher concentration of graphics whores.  Halo 2 had some of the best graphics out there from 2004-2006 but even if Halo 3 could be said to have the best graphics now that won't last for long.

My own guess is that the odds are about that same that Halo 3 will be the worst selling of the trilogy as they are that it will sell over 11 million.   I'd put the odds of Halo 3 hitting 15 million at about the same as the odds that Gears of War will outsell Halo 3.  That said I think you need to ask sqrl for his "owner of most outrageous VGCharts prediction" signature Mr Stickball.  Sorry sqrl, you're going to have to be a lot crazier than Mario Galaxy will sell 50 million (IIRC) if you want that title on this website.

Okay, this will ignite all kinds of "your crazy" flaming threads, and the like. Cities will burn, but it'll be okay :)

Anyways, I'm going to break away from my former prediction of 10.5m for Halo 3, and wind up increasing it to 14.5m-16.5m.

There are a few reasons for this, and just go with me, to explain why Halo 3 has this sort of capacity.

Reason #1. Uber-sellers must debut early (~3yrs) in the consoles lifespan.

This isn't always true for every game (GTA:SA), but has been true for the vast majority of games. FFVII, many GTA games, SM64, and such all debuted early in their respective consoles lifespan. When we talk Halo 2 numbers (which sold around 8.5m copies or more), we're talking a game that was incredibly late in the Xbox's lifespan. The console was DOA within 1 year of Halo's launch due to the X360. Despite this, it has managed good legs, selling about 4m units after it's o/w. Not only this, the important key is that the Xbox only managed to sell another 5 million hardware units - not enough to bring new blood into the Microsoft machine to sell more units.

On the other hand, Halo 3 has debuted rather early in the X360's lifespan, and it's an absolute lock that the X360 will surpass those numbers (6m+ consoles for the rest of it's lifespan). Because of this, the more hardware will simply allow for more software to be moved.

I don't think that this is very true.  There are simply too many exceptions.  SMB3 released quite late in the life of the NES, but is the #3 best selling console game of all time (after SMB and Pokemon R/B/G combined).  Gran Turismo 2 for the PS1 came out in 1999 and sold over 8 million, the #3 seller on that system.

I think that games were hurt by coming out late in a console's life much more when the new console was not backwards compatible.  I'm sure GT2 was bought by many people who played it on a PS2.  I own a PS3 and not a PS2, and I own a dozen PS2 games -- which I play on the PS3.  Halo 2 can be -- and has been, extensively -- played on the 360.

Reason #2 - No Comparible Game will exist to rival Halo 3.

Okay, this is very subjective, but nevertheless: I feel that it'll take quite a bit of time for a new IP, or franchise game to come out, and rival Halo 3 in terms of gameplay, and such. I'm just merely talking from an Xbox guys POV. In the case of Mario 64, and other Mario's, no game really compared to it for years. Likewise, GTA and Grant Turismo can say the same: they were the name brand racers and sandbox games for years. This is a key to garnering more sales. If Halo 3 can still be the name-brand FPS by this time next year, it's feasable it could move 500k or even 1m units during next Christmas. Remember, Halo 2 still moves 6k units/wk. Not much, but for 3 years on a totally dead console, that's very good (see any GC games topping the VGC 200 that are from 2004?).

I completely disagree.  Halo 3 certainly produced a completely unprecedented (well, maybe not coughTheWizardcough) and actually somewhat grotesque level of hype.  I don't doubt that the combination of marketing blitz, viral strategy, and sheer popular momentum will be unrivaled for a very long time indeed.  After all, this is the culmination of a game series that literally helped keep a game system alive (along with Microsoft's bottomless bank account, of course).  And yes, the hype isn't going to flip off like a light switch just because the game is out; there'll be quite the afterglow.

However, none of this means that Halo 3's gameplay will rule the roost for very long.  Halo 3 is pretty hot shit, but I don't think we can reasonably expect nothing to top it for more than a year or so.  In fact, Call of Duty 4 may do that much sooner, at least in certain respects.  I don't think it can be denied that the 360 is getting relatively more attention from developers than the Xbox did; and that means more games, and more good games -- and those games will inevitably take sales away from Halo 3.

Reason #3 - No proper sequel for quite some time.

As far as we can tell, no sequal is in development (H4) that would curb purchasing the game a few years down the road. Although we sometimes the prequel to a game get a boost from the new franchise releasing, it's usually short lived, and dies real quickly afterwards. If Halo 3 ends up being the final one, what prevents it from selling 15m units or more if the X360 still exists in 2010 as Microsoft's primary console, and has sold 45m hardware units? To some, that might be a high number, but still, if the X360 sold 45m units, I feel Halo3, if still the primary MS-IP could wind up with a 30-35% attach ratio.

Those are just some quick ideas I had. At either rate, I do feel that since the X360 has such a small, but growing fanbase and will easily surpass the Xbox's lifetime sales, even if not by much, and the fact the X360 has atleast 3 years left of sales before a sucessor releases, it'll do well.

Now, having said this, these 3 rules also apply to a few other major franchise games on other consoles such as Super Mario Galaxy, which the formula can really be seen in. Also, when I refer to no comparable games, I know we have KZ2 fanatics, and PC FPS junkies, but I am reffering to the X360 only. I am sure other viable FPS games might try to rival H3 on the other systems, but for the X360, it's doubtful that any will rival H3 for years.

I think that this is at least somewhat true, but I think you overestimate how much sequels ordinarily cut a game's legs by.

And keep in mind that the higher a console's total sales get, the harder it is to have games with very high attach rates -- because those high-selling consoles are by definition reaching a wider audience.  This applies epecially to "hardcore" games.  For the 360, "wider audience" = "non-Halo-fan audience".  Some of those people will of course become Halo fans, but 30% is certainly too much to ask there.

If you look at the (recent) games that have sold in the 15 Million range (Nintendogs, Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto) you will notice that they were all released on systems which were selling amazinly fast when these games were released, had larger usebases than the XBox 360 has, and sold to a very broad audience.

HappySquirrel also makes an extremely good point here; I'll let his words speak for themselves.

Well, no.  I actually think that Galaxy=50m and Halo3=15m are pretty close together in terms of likelihood, which is pretty damn scary.  Think about that for a minute.  Predicting Galaxy to hit FIFTY MILLION is not much more unreasonable than predicting Halo 3 to hit FIFTEEN.  (IMO of course.)  If anything though the Galaxy prediction is still somewhat more 'out there'.
