Forums - Microsoft Discussion - IMO: A few reasons why Halo 3 might wind up with 15m+ units sold

It really depends on how big the 360s userbase gets. If we agreed that it will be somewhere in the 30-40 million range, then I don't think 15 million sales is going to happen. If it does more than 40 million, then maybe.

Halo 3 is the greatest multiplayer FPS experience, it is no denying, I love it.

Is it your second Multiplayer FPS?

There is nothing drastically different in Halo 2 that wasn't done in Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike, America's Army or Quake 3 way back in the day ...

I'm not saying it is bad but come on.

It's the best MP experience on a console but the PC world has loads of other great games. Either way, it will sell like free crack at a Marion Berry charity event.

15m is a bit high. I think it will cap out around 10m at best.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I think it'll sell 12 million by the end of it's lifetime.

I say it'll cap at 8mil

Just to add to your theory mrstickball

I already know 4 people that bought Halo 3 that are not fans of the game (including myself). Purely because everyone on live is playing it... and they want in on the fun. Live definately helps sell copies and when 50%+ are playing Halo... you want in.

I don't know what you mean by there's no other game like it...but I'm quite certain that COD4 will take some players away from Halo 3 when it comes out.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

15 mill easily.. with Halo wars RTS and a potential movie coming out over the next year or two the franchise will push millions of units. A movie deal alone would wake up many sleepers.

Price wise the 360 will be able to drop down and compete this holiday and especially next holiday.. i wouldn't be surprised to see 199-249 price point over the next 6 months with elite being 379-399 - especially after falcon is in distribution and MS is in the black. They will be able to take risks on bumbing up market share now that they have a solid AAA base.

In a way that may be true but COD4 will continue to build the 360 as a platform of which people will be bargain shopping halo 3 in the future and continue to grow its base from.

I agree that it will surpass Halo 2 in sales but i think 15 million is a bit high. I'm more inclined to say Halo 3 will reach the 10 million mark. I could see it being as high as 12 million but for H3 to reach 15 million+ the 360 would have to do at least NES numbers in world wide sales.

Exactly what is preventing Halo 3 from selling decently 4 years down the line again?

In the case of the N64 arguments - Goldeneye and Mario Kart were released when the N64 was in decline, and hurt sales. Likewise, everyone is assuming and pidgeonholing the X360 to 30m sales. What if it sold 45m consoles, as I sugguested? At 45-55m consoles, the 15m unit sales would be feasable.

And to argue the PS2 game points: Remember, I said one of the huge boons was the fact there WON'T be another Halo. There was a Gran Turismo 4 that killed 3's sales, there was a GTA:SA that killed VC, and likewise, a IV that killed SA. What happens when you DONT get a sequel?

Not only this, the nature of Halo3 makes it probable to sell so well. The advantage it has is multiplayer, which is why I'm arguing so insane numbers. With people playing Halo 3 instead of selling copies to the used market (see my discussions about killing new sales with used games).

Remember, Halo 3 "is" Microsoft's big IP. Sony never really had "just one" uber-IP, but Nintendo did (with Mario). If the X360 sells 40-50m units, it's entirely feasable. Thats why I argue my ideas.

Please note, I never said that it WILL sell that high. I am just giving trends and such to validate the idea that it COULD hit that high. If there is a Halo 4, the X360 fails to hit 45m, or the X360 really does get some sort of uber-FPS that easily converts the Halo 3 userbase, my projection dies real quick. Thats why I said there were reasons, not just some randon thing on it.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
