Forums - Gaming Discussion - PC gaming is dead!

PC gaming has become more niche, relatively speaking, than it was 10, 15, 20 years ago. But I guess no worries, eh. PC gaming is a treadmill when/if you try to keep up to the technological bleeding edge and/or you want to play those bleeding edge games and have to keep upgrading. That's what killed it for me, having to buy a new piece of hardware (graphics card, memory, cpu) every 4-5 months to play a game at 30fps or better.

I read the entire linked article and while the death of PC gaming is much exaggerated it's not what it used to be. I am pleasantly surprised at least once a month with some flash or java internet game that is fun/inventive/cool enough for me to put more than a few hours into it. The last time I bought a PC game to play was in the last millennium. Tastes change as you age.

Hehe, I know that PC is not worth that money, but hey, it still looks hefty :P

I could buy a better system with a lot less money, and even better looking, with custom designed paint and case (thank you Dremel), and a peltier-based cooling system (with customized radiatior of course). Only thing I haven't done yet is customized form factors for the case, but its on the works :D

But no, a rule for me is not spending more than $2000 on a computer... even my last update costed less than $600 heh. And it works kickassks :)

exactly you only have to spend that every 3 years after you have a good computer about 200 - 600 bucks because there are the low-grade graphics cards that top your $600 top of the line you bought 3 years before that. But I dont have a desktop and it seems im going to hold of a bit longer then I wanted because of USB 3.0 being released.

USB 3.0? Are you serious? I mean, I've heard so many "I'm gonna wait to get my computer becasue videocard x is coming out or new processor y is coming out." And usually, there is no point in waiting. But USB 3.0? That just takes the cake.

well.. the 9800GTX is rumored to come out in the spring like USB 3.0 so thats why im holding of getting a new motherboard, plus by the spring ddr3 and PCIe2 will be more stable.

I'm waiting for the next series of DX10 cards to come out that don't require vacuum-cleaner fans or occupy 21 free slots - probably by Christmas season, but by now there should at least be rumors of new cards coming out.

What's up with that? The GeForce 8800GTX XXX is STILL the fastest card out there, and it's been how many months since any upgrade?

I think you missed the memo that the 8800Ultra is the fastest.

The DX10 selection sucks.

WORD.

Which is why I'm still hanging on to my 1650 and 6600 - both are fanless, one-slot wonders, something that ALL GPUs should take into consideration when they are designed.

I mean, it's actually misleading to everyone (but the most diehard fans who follow up on this information): a DX10 2400 that can't keep up with a DX9 1950? Does that even make sense?

No - that's a marketing ploy GPU - come on, 150 bucks for an overclock I can do myself?

Anyhow, the point is that the 8800 series has been out what, since before the launch of the Wii and PS3 and yet it is still the series to beat? That's very, very un-PC-like, if you know what I mean.

actually theres a reason for that, the 2400 is a 1900 with a higher number, look it up its the truth. AMD/ATI screwed up big time with it, jsut like the x2900xt.

But regardless, it's been a very long time since a bona-fide sucessor to the 8800 and 1950 were released. The 2800 can keep up with the 8800 but it's just not a good design - fan blowers, dual slots, insane watt requirements, special PSU - come to think of it, sounds just like the 8800 - another reason why I refuse to buy any of the current crop of DX10 cards.

That's my gripe - not that there aren't any fast cards, but that the cards haven't evolved in the slightest. It's the same 8800 that sounds loud as a vacuum cleaner, occupies one slot too many, and just about requires its own generator to run. That doesn't sound like a good design to me.

My 6600 and 1650, on the other hand, are fanless, take up one slot, and do not require any additional connectors. Nice and neat - and silent! - that's the way I like it, and that's how I feel it should be.

Holy shit you guys are willing to spend a lot on a computer. I am not knocking the computers or anything, cause they are freaking badass, but that is some pure fucking devotion.

Yes, I am willing to spend a lot.

Just don't let me see you knocking people who don't want to spend money on a PS3, and instead choose a Wii because it's cheaper, okay?  Because it's the same thing.

Its just easier to cheat online on a pc game than it is to cheat/glitch on a console game. Tho that's not to say it doesnt happen..... then there's people online who dont cheat but are just general douchebags. Its not worth it.

People cheat online with console games too... just buy one of those gameshark-like thingies. Good thing for both console and PC gamers is that with online, bugs/glitches/exploits can now be patched, where just a generation ago patches were the exclusive domain of PC gamers (a dubious distinction, to be sure).

Also, doesn't Punkbuster resolve many of the cheating issues? I sometimes have to turn it off, though - Punkbuster is a bit overzealous in its protection, having banned my brother-in-law several times (and no, he doesn't cheat!)...

I could still spend less buying all three of the major consoles than I would need to spend to run Crysis at the kind of level that would do the game justice.

yeah, this is exactly one of the mythes about pc gaming. in april I've upgraded my 3 years old PC with 500$, and now I can play everything on maximum details at 60fps in 1280*1024.

And I spend 10-20$ less for every game... buying a game per month it's 180$ per year less.

Oh, and I don't pay to play online.

I own a PC and many consoles and believe me, the PC is not the more expensive.
