Forums - Sales Discussion - The OFFICIAL Feb 2007 NPD Thread

I think the numbers for Sonic show that when Nintendo said it was aiming to expand the market, they really meant it... I think it's fair to understand or believe that the super casual easy going players are buying it for Wii Sports which is complimented by Wii Play. WarioWare - WHO would have ever expected such a short shitty game to be that high in the charts on it's SECOND MONTH??? It is simply impossible to predict things like this. Sonic is a gamers game I believe, with some slight mainstream appeal, but just not enough for it to do anything really spectacular... Tiger Woods PGA 07.... i'm looking forward to seeing those numbers on Wii...

WarioWare is an awesome game... It lasts a long time when you have someone else in the house to compete with for high scores in the mini-games... And it takes a little while to unlock all the mini-games too... Its looking like WarioWare Wii become the best-selling WarioWare yet, WW... 3 million possible, lifetime? It was outsold by Zelda though, so there's still a lot of the existing Nintendo audience propelling Wii... Combined Zelda sales have a chance to make it the most popular Zelda ever... Its halfway there already... But yeah... Sonic bombed... Not just because its a "gamers game", but because it was hyped, and then got mediocre reviews... Gamers games live and die by reviews... It barely outsold Rayman... Which reminds me, Rayman is doing absolutely amazing... 90K January, 60K Feb... Given the one less week, thats less than a 20% decline... Its at 375K NA, and should cruise to 1mil WW. I expect Tiger Woods to do incredibly well... How can it not? Wii Sports and Wii Play are clearly becoming the main killer apps for the system even in the West, and TW could hit a wide part of that audience... An audience who won't read the mediocre reviews, BTW...

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Yep. This month was really disapointing for PS3. I believe next month will be much better. This is the worst period for PS3 (no games, Wii-hype, few very strong titles for X) so it can be only better. X is a real winner here. Strong hardware and software sale. BTW - Sega has a real problem. VF and Sonic aren't popular anymore. It used to be a flagships some time ago.

Long thread, I just want to point out something intresting: (vgchart number) PS3 sales in feb: jap: 86 500 usa: 133 750 Total: 220 250 Xbox360 sales in feb: jap: 20 250 usa: 257 500 Total: 277 750 Difference: Xbox360 - PS3 = 57 500 WW. The PS3 is not closing the gap to the Xbox360

Here we go again. Nintendo fanboy by any chance?

Well these are very bad news for Sony .Terrible news ,in fact .I expected the Playstation brand to be able to carry the sales of the console even with the 600 price for some 6 months but it seems even the Playstation brand cant do something like that .The PS2 sales are incredibly high and will probably surpass the Wii next month .And the PSP ,wich was gaining some momentum ,has dipped again to 176K .All in all very bad news for Sony .March will be better ,but the question is that is must be A LOT better to put any fight to the other consoles ...at least in march the benefits of VF5 ,F1 ,Motorstorm ,NBA Homecourt ,NBA COllege Hoops ,Armored Core 4,Oblivion ,Def Jam Icon,Flow ,Tekken DR,SPlinter Cell DA and the announcements of Home and Little Big Planet will become more tangible ,but if things continue like that Sony should consider a inminent price drop .

Not really infact I went out and bought a 360 just the other day and have plans to pick up a ps3 sometime in the future. I -prefer- nintendo if you want to call that fanboy whatever. My point is I like how you say "oh here come the nintendo fanboys flaming again" when all I really see is you fighting logic with the outrageous "You're a fan boy!" It's like arguing about God with a Christian. "Well who made God?" "Nobody made God he just is.." Do you see how difficult that is to argue even though it makes absolutely no sense to any rational human being?(I'm not saying God doesn't exist just that looking at it from a rational objective perspective... you would not believe it period.) I didn't mean to be insulting with the drug comments but damn man, before you complain about flaming, look at the flame bait you post everywhere. A lot of people are very passionate about their favorite game systems and I can understand you may be too but you're a bit excessive at times. Maybe you'd want to tone it down and be more oh what's the word, open minded. In addition look at the facts, anytime you outsell the competition, it doesn't much matter by how much. At this rate the PS3 - Wii sales would need to do a total flip for 3 or 4 months for Nintendo Wii to be considered in trouble of "burning" Cost as you put it is not an ultimate factor, it -is- a big factor but so is value. If something is a good value people will buy it despite the cost. If the PS3 indeed was some monster that could not be contained the price tag.. well wouldn't contain it, at least not as much. I think a big factor we need to look at here also is a LOT of people saw and still do see Sony as arrogant and ignorant, something Nintendo did during N64 and look what happened there.. Brand name never means much, consumers will always jump ship for the value. Sorry that was a little long winded.

I think Sony is just riding the PS2 sales right now, they are thinking about the PS3 but not like they should, the problem here is that in a year people are going to stop buying PS2's in mass quanties because Microsoft will have done a price drop and Nintendo would do a price drop(being forced by Microsoft cause a lot of people will be like it's just 50 dollars more) and then the PS3 will proce drop but still be higher than the competition then if PS3 sale keep bombing what will happen then. The casual gamer will not spend 400-500 dollars on a game system cause they don't like the price and don't care about cutting edge graphics, this is why the Wii sales so well plus it's always going to be the "cheap" system that parents get their kids for there birthday.

VF was never that popular outside of Japan. Sonic has been killed by a series of substandard entries into the series. The 360/PS3 version of Sonic was the opitomy of that. Sega's real problem is that ever since the went 3rd Party, their software quality has plummeted. I never thought I'd see the day when I'd take my chances with an EA title over a Sega one. The funny thing is, they sold 2K sports to Take Two. Dumb move on their part, because 2K sports is still churning out quality software. Sega better give AM2 and Yu Suzuki whatever they want because thats about the only top tier dev team they have left. BTW Sorry for going off topic
