Forums - General Discussion - Anybody else's Sony stuff just stop functioning?

argh...this is annoying me. first, it was all of a sudden, my sony dvdrw stop burning cd to cd/dvd to dvd without any warning tho data backup burning works perfectly. and now, im trying to play some ps1 games on my ps2 and it doesn't load. the last time i touched ps1 on ps2 was at least 2 years ago. i don't want to set up so many consoles since i have the ps2, wii, panasonic q and dvd players set up. i feel like Sony somehow set a timer in their products so when the time comes, certain functionality shuts off and it forces you to buy new ones.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

I have never had an issue with sony products.

Actually a Japanese friend of mine told me a joke that supposedly circulates there a lot. He told me that Sony installs a timer for products to stop working 1-6 months after their warranty wears off. I have had problems with -some- sony products I admit that but no more then I have with Microsoft or most other companies. However as far as games go Nintendos reliability puts them all to shame.

My first PS2, after 2 years almost exactly, stopped reading blue discs and occasionally gave disc errors (lens/disc cleaners did nothing). Sony wanted $75 + shipping and waiting 4-6 weeks. I bought a PS2 slim less than a week later. Not the best customer support, IMHO.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I have owned a lot of Sony products that just died ... The odd thing is my yellow Sony walkman from 1994 still works, although I have no reason to still use it

It is funny. My PS1, PS2's (2 of them),PS3, 99 XBR, 03 XBR, Explode speakers, Home stereo, and PSP all still work. But two of the cd walkman's that I have owned died really quickly. Some of those WDL headphones stop working after a couple of months.... but I aint going to use thier warranty because they are only 10 bucks. I know one person who's PS2 stopped reading discs so he has to open it and clean it periodically. I have no idea what this says about their products.

My PS2 died and it was less than 2 years old. I refused to buy another one. By that time my brother was on his second unit and he bought one of those extended warranties. So I gave any of my games that he wanted to him. The rest I traded in to EB along with my broken PS2 unit. All of my friends, with the exception of one of them have had their PS2 die on them at least once. So I'm not real high on Sony quality. I mean my bro and best friend's PS1's were crap. I mean my best friend, at the time, had to turn his PS1 upside down or on the side to get it to work half the time. My bro's PS1 was the same way. HappySqurriel, I'm not surprised that your walkman still works. My bro has an old Sony Trinitron TV, and he has had it for at least 10 years and it works fine. It seems to me that the newer Sony products aren't built as well as the old ones.

I've heard this a lot. From my personal experience I've had my PS2 die on me after about 3 years. I've also replaced 5 other PS2's for friends as an ex-retail slave. We would often send 3-4 broken PS2's back to HQ every week.

I am surprised to hear this. Out of all my friends only one had an issue with the PS2...... and I have alot of friends. I have owed 2 PS2 and purchased another two for friends/relatives. I had no issues with my PS1 and neither of any of my friends. Is this hardware failure batch based, location based or interface based. I really would like to know.

Search "Disc Read Error" on google ... Millions of PS2 systems just (seemingly at random) stopped reading PS2 discs and DVDs ...
