Forums - Nintendo Discussion - THQ - Wii is a nightmare for third parties, it's a Monopoly box in the clos

is amazing how no matter how many developers say this, wii fans now better.

So game companies are just full of fanboys that dont want to make money so they are trolling on the wii?

If you look though, for the most part the developers who are saying this are bleeding red ink (losing money). Had this comment been made a year ago, it would have been more in line with general sentiment because many developers seem to have changed their tune in the last year.

Basically, THQ console game development has lived on licenses and casual games. Deadly Creatures is an example of what may be wrong with the industry -- developers making games for themselves rather than for the general game-buying public. Meanwhile, de Blob has sold close to 1M and did not have a price drop for a long time -- THQ even talked it up previously.

So yes, some game companies seem to be full of fanboys because they bet on the wrong horse this generation -- and it along with the down economy is costing them.

The game of gaming is changing and it will be game over for those that do not change.

Malstrom actually responded to this:

http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/wii-is-monopoly-box-stuck-in-the-closet/

"THQ is a classic example of the Birdman Fallacy at work. I should update the graphic. Have the real dog be what gamers want and ‘casual games’ be what they get. There should be a ‘hardcore game’ which represents the dog as a hellhound. No one wants a hellhound! But that is what these companies keep putting out when they focus on ‘hardcore games’. Just give me a dog!"

lol!

I wonder if all this means that they won't bring "Drawn to Life" to the Wii after all.

THQ: were did start making hardcore games for wii.at first we were developing wii versions of Saints row 2 and red faction which could have been marketed alongside the HD counterparts. then we realised that an unmarketed game about bugs would sell much better

another really good summary i found was

1. THQ makes crap for wii
2. majority of crap doesnt sell well
3. THQ blames wii as there is a lot of crap so THQs crap cant stand out
4. THQ pledges to make more crap

THQ is still in business? This company brings out horrible wrestling games and pretty much nothing else.

Admittedly, THQ hasn't been the best thing to happen to consoles. But I actually consider THQ one of the top publishers of PC games. Their RTS games on PC are awesome. Company of Heroes is the best RTS game ever, period. The Dawn of War series is really good too.

Actually, Red Faction is another great game that they produced... for consoles. The sequel is due out any day now and the reviews have been really good. I don't think you should  hate on THQ for not making quality Wii games. No one (other than Nintendo) has really contributed anything exceptional to the "library" of "hardcore" games for the Wii. Perhaps this guy is just voicing the feelings of alot of developers and publishing studios.

Great comment

It's like the whole world has resorted to blatant trolling :x

but when the whole world says it is it still trolling?

Not everyone is saying it though - only a few publishers are.

Great comment

It was, with the exception of the inaccuracy of the last 2 lines.

This is odd considering that De Blob is their 3rd highest selling new IP (on consoles) of this generation - the highest being Saint's Row, followed by Big beach Sports (also on Wii). Their other high selling titles are wrestling and those sell just little bit less on the wii than the other console.

actually there's no recipe how to make a Wii game that will sell, games expected to sell fail massively and games that are expected to fail sell million out of nowhere, Wii is the most unpredictable

but the sure thing is that games, hard core or casual sell slowly on Wii, at least SEGA knows it

btw, SEGA is probably the only 3rd party that fully understands what Wii owners like and that's why almost all their games sell, hard core or not, maybe Madworld hasn't got huge launch but will still make it to 0.5 million

but why does THQ complain, most of their Wii games sell except Deadly Creatures

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

...then the nightmare of all for third parties, frankly, is the Wii. The Wii is a Monopoly box in a closet! I've got my Wii Sports and I'm good! I take it out, get the family around, we flail around for a couple hours, and we're happy until next month when we take it out, or maybe for junior's birthday, I'm going to buy him a Mario game." - Danny Bilson, SVP of creative development at THQ

Mr. Bilson went on to discuss Wii support, and how THQ was at one time bringing over hardcore titles, but have since stopped that.

"(We plan to) greenlight more Wii games: family, casual, get everyone on the couch games. I'm a big believer in that. Right now, we're not moving hardcore stuff to the Wii. We were; we stopped it, just because we're a little risk averse. I want to be with the culture of the Monopoly box in the closet – I've got to feed them. I've got to get them to want to buy another game, because they're not the gamers that are looking forward to the next thing next week in putting in the pre-orders and all that."

I really can't understand how developers / publishers think anymore. Even if THQ is right and 3rd party sell nothing on Wii, even if all Wii install base is casuals buying no games, how can you possibly OUTRIGHT INSULT the very customer group you're aiming at? It's a basic marketing / business principle!!!

Iwata called Japanese Wii owners fickle and I didn't see anyone in an uproar...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
