Forums - Sony Discussion - PSPgo: A touch screen at secret?

Hate to break it to ya, Leo.

If a gaming system was meant to have a touchscreen, it would have a stylus. Check out the side/profile shots of the PSP Go. No stylus slot. So not touchscreen, I'm guessing.

iPhone.

Something's awry...

If they are trying to make this a proper multi-media devise, a touchscreen would be really useful for using the non-gaming functions like music and movies.

then you have to ask the question, if it had a touchscreen, why not a sim card slot?

I'll answer your question with a question : why sell a range of phones & a portable gaming device as opposed to selling a portable gaming device which is also a phone ?

I don't think the PSP Go will have a touch screen 1. Because of the extra RAM usage 2. Because of it's limited usefullnesss 3.Because of the additional cost 4. Because of firmware requirments .

Could be although I wouldn't mind it if it didn't have one.

On SIM card issue - that's the jist of it, Sony would want to market this as a gaming device to gamers first and foremost. if it had greater connectivity, say through a phone function, you'd want to aim that at existing PSP users, and at the phone market. there is much space for confusion and i think Sony would be keen to avoid any confusion, but already people are saying the iPhone is a real competitor to the handheld gaming market as a phone.

On the touchscreen issue and lack of RAM,

- the DSi only has 16Mb and has a touchscreen, and a second screen.

- the iPhone does have way more - 128Mb and a touchscreen.

- The PSP2000 has 36Mb of RAM, which was more than the PSP1000, so there could be another RAM increase made available only for apps and not games.

BUT the PSP go will have 16Gb of flash memory built in, which, if used correctly can be used as RAM. so hardware wise,we don't even know the actual spcs of the system yet, but so far, its not badly off for touchscreen capabilities.

Not really a sign, given that slider phones have existed for years without having a touch screen.

I think it'd be nice to have a touch screen for media purposes (like onscreen buttons WMP style).

Would make it a lot easier to watch movies without having to slide open the PSP-Go.

Sorry to burst bubbles.

iPod Touch and iPhone says hi.

The new Aino phone has a slider with buttons, an accelerometer and touchscreen for game/multimedia purpose... actually the PSP Go could very much have a touchscreen too. The question remains why would they leak so much information about the PSP GO (we have picture of the device from every angle) two days prior to their conference and wittingly jeopardize one of their big announcement if there wasn't something else to it ?

Perhaps they just want it to look like an iPod?

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy
