Forums - Gaming Discussion - A stupid trend in "vs" games

By vs games, I mean games that put you one-on-one against another person online.

For example: Street Fighter, UFC, etc...

The stupid trend - No consequences for quitters. You're beating someone online and all of a sudden it freezes and you get a msg saying the connection is lost. You dont get a win, they dont get a loss. It happens VERY frequently as I just had 3 in a row in UFC Undisputed.

It happened so often in SF4 that it made Ranked matches and BP virtually worthless. Even when Capcom "fixed it" with their patch, they just put a disconnection percentage beside players names. If they DC on you, you still dont get a win.

Its even worse in UFC as the matches are much longer and slower. As soon as ppl realize you are beating them, they quit. Its a huge waste of time.

Why do devs still allow this in games? Surely they could make it so that whoever disconnects automatically gets a loss.

This was the only reason why I didnt buy UFC or Street Fighter, I rented them and finished their story modes.

Yeah but online is a HUGE part of games these days. Youd think devs would take time to ensure there's some quality to it.

Why even program and develop ranking systems when it can EASILY be cheated due to a PROGRAMMING FLAW on the devs part. No consequences for cheaters.

Doesnt seem to make any sense. I will not even blame people who disconnect. They are just thinking "hmm should i lay there and get wait to get KO'd, or should I just quit and save some points while I'm at it??".... it's not a very hard choice. I blame the developers. That Choice should not even be possible in the game.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Devs don't give people auto loses becuase if someone connection gettings lost by error not by manual disconection then they would get a loss with out losing..Capcom was very smart in putting these percentages that way people know who is a loser and can chse not to fight them.....Blaming the developers is stupid....Some people are just loser....And those people that Disconect in SFIV are just plain loser am I'm glad Capcom has found a way to point them out...Now not only do they feel like losers when they do it...Everyone can know about it...Again Devs cannot force people to saty connected becuase people would just turn their consoles off.....

zizzla....

its way more of a hassle to turn off the system and then reboot every time you want to fight online. That would stop quitters almost completely.

connections getting lost by error... i know what youre saying... but seriously, how often does that happen? because NO ONE even disconnects on me when theyre winning. only when theyre losing. and connections lost by error happen to me maybe 1 out of every 200 fights in SF4. Id way rather take that 1 loss than to be deprived out of 33% of my wins. Its even worse in UFC since the game is still new, i guess ppl care more about their records.

Quitters should be hunted down and shot.

Haha, my firend's and I have a policy to quitting that is a lot tamer.

Person who quit get yelled at, and the "victim" get a free quit without any complaints.

I may try the punch iin the face policy, though...

Well in Gears of War 2, every time somebody quits the match counts as lost, and they lose experience

Same in Fight Night, Top Spin, PES (i think) : quit = loss.
It's not a matter of trend but rather a matter of competence and when it comes to online, pure console developers often lack the experience.

There should be common rules asked by MS/Sony/Nintendo (quit=loss, show connexion quality, trueskill based matchmaking for ranked match, removing cheated character from ranked match-King was allowed in VT3 for way too long-, etc.).
