First off if you have Dewy's Adventure and are interested send me your Wii code (I know Shams has a Wii code thread but I don't want to bother him) so we can trade levels we design. I think this is the coolest part of the game and I'd like to see other people's levels and share mine.
Anyhow, I didn't see a Dewy impressions thread so I'll give it a full review since I've been watching this game since it was announced. I have to say, the Dewy plush doll is one of the coolest game freebies I've ever gotten. It's really a lot bigger than I expected. Gamestop was giving them away so that's the place to get the game. Anyhow, my positives and negatives for the game are:
Positives
Most important thing: you can turn down the sound effects independent of the music so you don't have to hear the baby giggling (you can still hear other sounds). Despite the kiddy presentation it is actually challenging in a good way. Getting an A or S rating in the first world is pretty easy but starting in the second world A and S ratings aren't so easy to get. The nice thing is that harder levels usually have a quick way to the exit so younger or less dedicated gamers can often skip the challenging segments at the price of losing a good score and extras.
The controls of course are like any of the marble games out there and aren't anything new. They do take a little time to get used to, kind of like Excite Truck. Also like Excite Truck they work well. The first world does a good job of providing practice so there's no long tutorial or inittial period of frustration. The A button holds the world steady so it's not like you're sliding everywhere constantly which is a definite plus.
As I mentioned, the extras include what I think is the coolest feature of the game, a level editor. I'm spending more time building new levels than actually playing the game. Initially you can only use around 10 out of 50 building blocks and you find the rest hidden in the regular game (frankly the only reason I'm playing it at the moment). You can drop enemies and stars in the level and play a single or multplayer game of racing to collect stars or kill enemies. The other extras are standard fare, character bios, sound test, picture taking, and so on.
Negatives
I don't have any major complaints but there are several minor gripes. For the most part you get 1 life per level (there are a few 1up's), die and you start over at the beginning.
Jumping takes a lot more practice to master than the other controls because it is based on 3 factors- 1) how long you hold the button, 2) Dewys velocity (which you control Dewy's acceleration so to control his velocity requires thinking ahead), and 3) any lips or bumps which can be hard to measure. It's not a major problem since most jumps don't require much precision but there are a few that do to get extras.
There are cannons that will shoot you to disconnected parts of levels that suck you in if you get to close which wouldn't matter if you could push A to exit but you can't.
Conclusion
I give it an 8.5/10. It's a really good game for non-testosterone addled gamers but it's not great. If you have a Wii and are looking for a game you could do a lot worse than Dewy *cough* MySims *cough*. It's a Wii specific game from a major 3rd party that turned out well despite a short development cycle and smallish budget, especially when compared to the crapware other 3rd parties are dumping on the Wii.
As a footnote, I don't expect this game to review much above the 7/10 range. It is kiddy looking and while the controls were easy for me to pick up I, unlike most game reviewers it seems, play my Wii on a regular basis.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't clarify my score well enough. It's a score for fans of this kind of game but an average score would be more like 7.5-7.7 since it's not going to convert many people who don't like cute platformers or marble type games.
