The Portuguese market for video games grew 17% in volume in the first four months of this year compared to same period in 2008, while sales of consoles grew some more modest 2%, advanced to the DN Gonçalo Fialho, director of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment in Portugal, leading the market with the PlayStation consoles.

The positive numbers of the Portuguese market come at a time when the U.S. video game industry fell from 16.9% in value in April, with a loss of 30% in terms of sales, according to figures released this week by NPD Group.

"The market for consoles has worked in Portugal in countercyclical, showing an aggressive growth, despite the less favorable economic environment," explained the DN Sofia Tenreiro, director of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Portugal, which sells the Xbox console.

"The Portuguese market is very specific, and consumers to increase consumption in entertainment 'in your room' as a distraction from the family, as spend more time indoors and less in activities such as cinema, restaurants or travel," added.

The results of the first months of this year in Portugal following the trend of 2008, the year the industry of video games ended with a growth of 12 million euros for 2007, totaling 174 million euros. The sale of game was the largest contributor to this positive behavior, increasing revenues 14% compared to 2007 to 84 million euros, the consoles have risen only 4.1%, with revenues of around EUR 76 million, according to numbers of GFK, a market analysis of company.

To Calvinho Nelson, public relations for Nintendo, the domestic market has "a vast potential for growth, especially from those who traditionally stay out of the accounts of the market for video games, as the public and senior women."

This bet is common in family entertainment for all three brands, market seeking, rather than gaming machines, entertainment centers for the whole family and not be confined to quarters of the offices of adolescents or young adults, but will be a cornerstone in living-rooms.

The same is shown, according to Sofia Tenreiro, that market the latest generation of consoles (PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii) to have increased "in recent months 42%, and the Xbox was the brand that had a higher growth (106%) during the same period. " For his part, Nelson Calvinho says that "over 80% of the Nintendo Wii owners chose connect it to the living room television."

According to GFK, the first time in 2008, the international market of video games exceeded the internationally DVD and Blu-ray in terms of revenue, totaling 32 billion dollars (23.54 billion) from 29.8 thousand million dollars (21.92 billion). Thats just what I thought when started to read the article. A lot of people says the crisis afects videogames but i  believe is the other way.

Here in portugal consoles are used primarily for family entertainment for a long time. Just see that the ps2 was the market leader (with more than 90%?) with its games of Buzz / SingStar / PES highly publicized. The PC has been mostly used by players called "core" but have slowly migrated to the consoles in recent times.
