Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will there ever be a clear cut winner this generation?

Well Nintendo are now the market leaders, they have made the most money and are so far ahead they nearly have 50% marketshare.

Now the only debatable thing left is games, and that IS debatable this gen compared to last gen, sure Wii hasn't got as many AAA games but imo the wii hasn't won because of the wii mote, its how it has been implemented into the games, and Nintendo have done a fantastic job with it.

No, there won't be a ps2 this gen. 360 might come close though.

The bias is strong with this one.

Wii U - Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (2010/2017)

PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

I'm not going to comment on every specific shade of grey mentioned, but let me just say most, if not all of them are irrelevent to who wins a generation. Nintendo won on both fronts, both home console and handheld. Their strategy was so ingenius that Sony and Microsoft still can't understand it, and likely won't be able to capture their own lightning in a bottle next generation. Nintendo has won this gen more than any hardware maker has won ever in the history of anything involving videogames. When all is said and done, Nintendo will likely have sold almost 300 million DS and Wii consoles combined, and that's unprecedented. Their ability to break sales records with games this gen and raising the cap for what makes a top tier game what it is sales wise, 15-20 million, has shown how much better they understand the market than anyone else does.

This is about as black and white as it gets.

Nintendo obviously is making the most profit this gen. As a result, they are the clear winners. As for the HD consoles, 360 has the lead. Unfortunately, the Ps3 is still dead last.

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Guidelines to understanding my train of thought:

  • THE METAL GEAR SOLID FRANCHISE IS THE BEST THING TO HIT THE PLANET SINCE THE PS3!! THUS, MGS FRANCHISE >> SLICED-BREAD.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always shove 1up mushrooms up Mario's ass.
  • Solid Snake shall and well always decimate Master Chief with a flurry of rocket launchers, shotgun rounds, and a 20 minute monologue.

I find the wii mostly boring but Nintendo clearly won. You could put me down in the first party only category though stuff like wii fitness and music are just never going to appeal to me.

For the fun stuff i've found ive had to mix it up between X360 and PS3. I've never liked the XBOX controller so multiplatform games almost always end up going to my PS3.

This isn't the first time we haven't had a clear-cut winner. The SNES and Genesis were neck and neck for years...
Even with the PS1/N64 gen, it's not like the PS1 had a huge win. N64 had a 40% market share at the beginning... I don't think the PS1 really pulled ahead until it was re-marketed as the PSOne, after the N64 was discontinued.

Anyway, competition isn't a bad thing. And there were plenty of happy Gamecube and XBox1 owners, as there were fantastic games on those consoles as well as the #1 PS2 :)

Nintendo has destroyed the competition, 360 has solidified its place in the home console arena with a solid showing, and Sony has continuously frightened fans with potentiallyeliminating itself from said arena.

It doesn't matter if you enter a competition just to better yourself, you may have completed your goal, but have you WON?

If you look at it this way then Nintendo is the clear winner.

Wii takes the crown

PS3 & Xbox360 will have to battle for profit (Both are losing money)

?

They've lost net money on the 360 so far this gen. If they hadn't even made the Xbox 360 they'd be better off. I don't think that could be called success, unless in terms of secondary effects on its Windows business.

Hmmm...clear cut winner as in.. getting as close to a monopoly as possible, like the NES and PS2?...probably not.

If you notice, the Wii has a lot of similarities with the NES, it´s like a new NES generation for Nintendo..the difference is after Nintendo revitalized the U.S. game market in the mid 80´s, it practically had no competition in getting 3rd parties to develop for the NES exclusively, it was too late for the Master System and the Atari 7800 (both the SMS and the Atari 7800 were made as a response to the NES resurrecting the market, while there´s no such thing this gen).

What am I getting at here?...I´m not really sure :P

I understand you... the NES released and was dominant before anyone else had a chance, same really with the PS1 and 2, true Sega did launch before them both times but they were not a real competition... partly because Sony flattened Sega Saturn by cutting the launch price of the PS1, and then the Dreamcast didn't have a decent starting leg due to the Saturn being it's predecessor.

Wii philosophy is similar to what it was for the NES, but it released last, and to very rich and very marketshare focussed competition (ie willing to cut prices hugely, pay for exclusives etc)
