Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is everyone so fascinated with old games?

Old games had more 'soul' (likes Mummelmann said), were less 'pretentious', there was more creativity.

I still play on my 1987 NES every once in a while.

It´s something only people who grew up with systems like the NES, SNES, Atari, etc..understand :)

Plus 16-bit games had some epic music due to its graphical limitations. In today's games good/great music is often a afterthought.

because sega insists that shining forces must be anything but real shining forces

This is all BS...Old School games feel More epic because of the Nostalgia tied to them....But then again...A lot of games post 32 bit and Beyond are crap...But anyway here is an attempt at an Analogy....If Ninja blade Would of Came out when the original Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi were out(of Course it would of been 2d But I mean story premise as the example) Would it have been criticized as much as it was?

If you don't understand it's OK....I used to smoke a lot of pot..

Well, I wouldn't have 38 VC games if I didn't love some old gems from the past. Some might not have aged too well but most are still as good as I remember them.

Why is Final Fantasy VII in your collection then? That game came out last millennium, and looks like it too.

Lots of people have smoked lots of pot, it doesn't make them not make sense.

But yes, you make sense, and YES, if they game hadn't met expectations it would have been destroyed in the reviews. Once upon a time game reviews were much more harsh than they are now, in our commercialized "pay to play" world.

Old school games don't rely on Nostalgia. Maybe some of the lesser ones, but the classics remain classics because of gameplay. These were games that were made that focused on gameplay and design to sell them, because you couldn't sell a game just by showing a bump mapped screen shot on the back of a box.
